Always amazed when people write off windows/osx/android/Linux entirely

Indeed. Computing is no place to make a binary decision.

4-6 hors to total reboot?
I'd have thought it'd be a lot quicker with it being Windows 8. In previous versions it only took an hour-90 minutes.

so there is a lot of really useful software that is never going to have a Mac version.

Really? Like what?

I've had so many dreadful experiences with Windoze I can't imagine why it's considered the default OS for many machines. I genuinely think they're tested by the geeks who make them, not normal users like me who don't want to endlessly tweak with the settings just to make it work to a bearable level.

If you have the patience of a saint or you thrive on frustration, then I imagine it would be great!

Not necessarily an Apple Fanboi, but it's never let me down unlike the Microsoft cr@p.

Then you haven't used it enough. All systems fail.

For starters as said it's is still a small use OS, why would niche software developers consider it?

I could find you a similar list of Mac only products. Not sure what it would prove though.

And of course the difference is that I could run all of those on my Mac just fine, whereas...

You're free to prefer Windows of course - just availability of software is a pretty spurious argument, especially these days.

some of them are to a lot of people, I use one every day. Just because you don't doesn't mean nobody does. though I'm amazed you made it through your raft of updates to come back to post....

Something that works!

Jamie, I'm only talking from my experience; from using windows since 1992 and Mac since 2004, I've never been let down by Mac OS (yes ive had HDDs fail on both systems) but I've had countless issues with Microsoft.

Some of the Mac software isn't perfect by a long chalk, but in the main it's easy to use and does what it's meant to.

I'm sure others might have alternative tales, but I've yet to use a PC post XP that hasn't been awful.

Except when it comes to actually running software for work and no I don't want to run stuff like that in parallels etc. It's both a preference and a requirement. Windows still accounts for about 85% of computers out there, Mac around 6%,(not looking at server stuff) there will be more tales of Windows woe due to the number using it, Mac users maybe a lot less, perhaps if it was running in a lot more places with people pushing it in all directions more issues would come out.

I'm sure lots of people have alternative tales, because I've used plenty of different PCs post XP and none of them have been awful.

You also don't seem to have come up with a suggestion for what the alternative should be.

And this.

No real issues (other than ones I have created myself) and I remember the change from DOS! I manage around 1000 users in the UK. I think we have 1 Mac which no one uses IIRC.

Well, a Big Mac is only £2.59!! Bargain, although you really need a double cheeseburger as well, or you'll feel hungry in 30 mins or so!!

A 15'' MacBook Pro with 512GB HD and 16GB RAM is £2k

I spent £360 on the 15'' HP Pavillion with 1TB HD and 8GB RAM

Totally not comparable in capabilities granted, but I wanted a 15'' screen and a large HD for music, movies and picture storage and the £2k Mac is the only one that comes close (although the HD is still too small for my needs).

(The lowest specification MacBook Air is £750 - 128GB HD and 4GB RAM and a tiny 11'' screen)

I thought we were talking about OS rather than hardware?

There's a reason they are 1/3 the price of Macs, but it's not what you think.

Jamie, I'm only talking from my experience; from using windows since 1992 and Mac since 2004, I've never been let down by Mac OS (yes ive had HDDs fail on both systems) but I've had countless issues with Microsoft.

That's broadly my experience too, used PCs since the late 80s right through to today and only discovered Macs in 2002. It was like a breath of fresh air and never looked back for any use where I have a choice. I just find Macs a better all-round user experience and certainly prefer their OS. Had some terrible experiences with high end PC laptops over the years in critical applications. PC Desktops have been slightly better for me. I've had trouble with Macs too, but few and far between and always hardware related. The last Toshiba laptop I had (mid-level model that came free from work) was seriously poor in just about every respect imaginable. I just couldn't face using it in the end, but I am spoilt with high end Macs.

My father in-law works in IT and is a PC man - knows nothing about Macs. But I've noticed he spends more time dicking with his PC than actually doing anything useful with it. That's how I feel with PCs too, but Macs tend not to get in the way of what you are trying to achieve.

A bit off topic - resale value on Macs is generally high, so they don't cost that much more to be honest.
