On a normal weekday, not including biking?.

Always seem to find so much different info on this.

I think an actual doctor - opposed to "the internet" - will just say you should drink enough so that your wee isn't bright yellow.

Personally I can easily have eight glasses of water a day alongside by coffee intake, but my wife seems to think that's weird.

2 - 3 glasses, plus 1 coffee and 1 tea. Possibly a beer as well.

I drink very little water (as above, only when exercising) but I do have fluids - coffee, milk, juice, beer, beer.

I am not actually dead yet and my pee is normally a 'normal' colour.

So much piffle around on drinking water - and the colour of your pee. Poppycock and balderdash, the lot of it.

I normally aim to get through a 2 litre bottle of water while working during the day and then I normally drink 2 or 3 soft drinks in an evening. I don't drink hot drinks so no tea/coffee mixed in with that either.

Two or three coffees in the morning then 4 or 5 of either hot water or herbal teas in the afternoon. No caffeine after 12-ish!

Genuine question--do you drink it because you want to or because you think you 'should'do?
personally I drink very little water but regular tea/coffee during the day. The thought of downing 6 glasses a day extra doesn't even occur to me really.

It's a habit and a good one I dare say. If you have a bottle of water on your desk or workstand you'll be sipping at that. If it's tea or coffee then you'll probably drink tea or coffee, or coke or whatever.

I try and drink at least 2 litres a day and I feel better for it.

around 1.5l at work (fill my bottle up twice). Probably 2 pint glasses of diluting juice from 6pm till bedtime, plus take a pint glass of water to bedroom and usually have most of it before getting up in morn.

I don't drink much at all unless exercising quite hard.
If I tried to drink the recommended 2l/8cups a day i'd literally have to live in the loos as i'd be peeing non stop

2 - 3 pints a day (more if exercising) and 3 - 4 mugs of green tea. Beer in added into the mix at weekends. Copiously.

Is the correct answer.

There is nothing special about drinking water rather than a drink containing water either.

Too much, probably.

A pint glass before breakfast, carry a water bottle around all day and fill it up a few times.
Pint before bed.

And about 15 mugs of tea.

Quite a lot, but mostly in tea and beer. Plus that which comes from food of course.

I'd guess ~1 litre of just water and ~3 litres in the form of hot and cold caffeinated drinks.

Only drink water....

... If there is no other tasty alternative. Normally drink 2-3 litres+ a day. Almost exclusively cold soft drinks. Only reason I put water in my camelbak is I CBA cleaning it out after

I love the people who scream about how caffeinated drinks dehydrate you. Yes, the few mg of caffeine will have an effect, but the glass full of water it's served with has a bigger one. Or I should have died of thirst about 15 years ago...

We have an inbuilt mechanism for managing fluid intake called thirst. It has been honed over millions of years.

The more recent obsession with drinking regardless of thirst is marketing.

That's all well and good when you only have access to water, today though we have all kinds of addictive sugary alternatives, many with implied sexy advantages over water. Drinking a little extra water has no negative consequences.

Whats your point? Drink fluid as you need it. Dont drink when you dont feel you need it. Dont be conned into purchasing expensive alternatives because of pseudo science.

On a day to day basis none, tea, squash the odd beer/wine G&T or two. Occasionally, if very thirsty I'll grab a glass of tap water. The only time I purposely drink water is from my camelback, just because I can't be bothered to be cleaning it all the time.

I think I am a bit odd. 2 to 3 litres of water while sat at a desk working, 4 or 5 coffees, a can of pop with lunch and a few pints of squash in the evenings. That doesn't include exercise and beer.

Typing that up, I am surprised I don't spend most of my day peeing.

In a perfect world perfect people eat and drink exactly as much as they need to when they need to. However, in the real world imperfect people suffer from cravings and addictions which can short circuit the bodies natural mechanisms for determining hunger and thirst, tricking them into eating and drinking things they shouldn't more often than they should.

So my point is, drink a little bit of extra water and when you feel hungry you'll know it's because you're hungry, not thirsty. And it'll diminish much of the desire to drink sweet or sugary drinks.

Since you're questioning this and making bold statements about inbuilt human mechanisms I'll assume that like most STW posters you are a perfect physical specimen with complete self control but a lot of people (an increasing number of people) these days are not.

I am perfect yes but thats not the point. I am saying that drinking fluids when you dont want to is not required. Your point about people getting hooked on sweet drinks etc is neither here nor there. I drink beer when I am not thirsty but I dont drink it because advertisers tell me too, it is not necessary for my survival or performance which is the rubbish often spouted by companies who want you to buy their product.

I'd say 1-2 litres a day on average.

Often have a small mug of milk before I leave home, but not if I'm having cereal with milk. Then take a 600ml bike bottle of water to work, usually get through that. Then in the evening a couple of glasses of water or squash, maybe more.

I rarely drink hot drinks, avoid coke and sugary drinks as much as possible and don't drink booze at home much.

To be honest, if water's on the desk I'll keep sipping then end up pissing all day. I tend to drink more so just when I'm thirsty, and then I'll down a pint of water or squash and that'll be it.

When I'm in the habit of putting a bottle of water on my desk I'll drink more water than I would if I didn't do that. It doesn't taste of anything, it's not addictive and I don't know what my hydration levels are but I drink it anyway. People are different, different activity levels, different appetites, different body types etc. I suffer no ill effects from regularly drinking water, so why should I wait till I'm thirsty as you describe? I've got buckets of the stuff coming out of my taps.

You is awesome however I am not telling you not too drink water as you want. The point I am making which you are choosing to misunderstand is that you should not feel obligated to drink if you dont want to and have no thirst. Is that clear enough?

If you are thirsty you are already getting dehydrated.

Anyhoos – the one thing I try my very best to avoid is buying bottled water (although I will buy soda water as I quite like that with cordial on an evening). Bottled water is such a rip off and I avoid even further those brands that tell us that their water helps us stay hydrated. No shit Sherlock!

I drink about 4 litres a day: 3 litres of water, at least 4 cups of tea/coffee, and then some squash on top of that.

The office is so dry, and everyone refuses to open the windows to let air in. its like prison, but i choose to do it.

I have a glass of water on my bedside table if I'm reading or watching telly.
Other than that all my water is second hand via tea, coffee or ale!

The whole "you should drink 2L of water a day" is misleading anyway, as it ignores water in food. It's not hard to consume 2L of fluid without trying.

Drink if you're thirsty, eat if you're hungry (and not because the clock tells you to or you're mis-identifying thirst as hunger).

I have a drink on the go at all times, be that a brew at work, a bottle of Coke in the car or a glass of water on the bedside cabinet. What I don't do is think "shit, it's been at least a minute since I drank something."

at work usually about 4 pints maybe more - hard physical work in a hot dry environment

I have not read all the posts but did spot the delightful nonsense of " once your thirsty you are already dehydrated"

Typically:
1 pint before I leave for work
1 pint as I get to work
1 pint mid morning
2 750ml bottles over the afternoon
1 pint when I get home from work
1 pint later in the evening
1 coffee.

So, lots. No idea if it does me any good but I feel alright and I find it stop me getting hungry.

I drink when I'm thirsty or my pee is an alarming colour. On colour though, it seems to me that a bit yellow is actually the sweet spot. The only times my pee is clear is when I'm having to go to the loo every 15 mins.

I drink shit loads of tea when pottering about the home. A litre of tea and a pint or two of water if outdoors volunteering during the winter, and an extra couple of pints if doing the same during the summer.

Should possibly start to drink a pint in the morning when I wake up I guess, but tea is good. 🙂

I'll drink up to 2 pints of tea a day I suppose...

IIRC, the two litres a day thing came from a guide for US Marines and was aimed at soldiers in the field in hot environments. Nobody knows the actual source for the Marines guide.

Water alone average 2.5 litre to 3.5 litre.

Not enough.

Daily fluid intake is usually...

One mug of coffee, couple of cans of sugar free pop, one 500ml bottle of water at work, and a couple of pints of water with tea and in the evening. Added beer and cider at the weekend.
