I'm wondering how much sleep the average person gets.

I remember Maggy Thatcher once said she only had 5 hours but most people say you need atleast 8 hours to function properly. The victorians used to live by rule of 8 hours labour, 8 hours recreation and 8 hours sleep.

I normally get 6/7 hours sleep and around 8/9 hours on a Sunday. First thing in the morning I am tired but after breakfast I'm firing again. If I don't exercise, I find it difficult to drift off and could easily stay up to the early hours in the morning.

So who has the least amount of sleep? and who has the most?

I reckon quality of sleep is more important. I've had 8-9 hours of restless sleep before and felt awful the next day. There have been times when I've had 6 hours of deep solid slumber and felt great in the morning. I always feel shoddy the morning after alcohol, even if it's just a pint or 2.

I aim for 8 but often get less.

Docs these days specify 7 hours to be about right for an adult. Personally I only sleep ~2 or 3 til 7:30ish. I feel aweful afterwards, but I simply cannot sleep before 2am, and cannot wake at normal times without 3 or 4 alarm clocks. I believe I have DSPS. I always sleep better after a drink or 2 and actually feel refreshed, which is unheard of - without it Ive never felt refreshed after sleep in my life.

I slept for 10.5 hours the other night. usual would be 8 - 9. I could get away with less but I wake up in the night quite alot which seems to wipe out the effect of a few hours. If I slept for 7 - 8 straight through I'd be fine. I dread having kids for that reason.

Between 7-9 hours. If I cut it down to 6 for more than a few days, I just feel dozy all day. I used to get away with down to 4 hrs for a few days on the trot, but that was 20 years ago.

I insist on a good nights sleep, usually in bed by 11pm and up around 6:30am - 7 days a week.
I dont lie in at weekends at all, I would get a stinking headache if I did...

Thinking about it, I am in a routine, my body is used to it cos I have been sleeping this pattern for yrs.
I never feel tired and I fire on all cylinders from the moment I wake till the moment I fall to sleep.
I always need to read before dropping off tho'
If people drink and eat late on at night then their bodies do not rest, stomachs are churning away etc.
Maybe the path to feeling refreshed is not the amount of 'shut eye' but how you prepare before going to bed..

I remember hearing a few years back that sleep should be in multiples of 3 hours,so 6 or 9 good, 7 or 8 bad - don't know how reliable that was though.

As mentioned above, quality of sleep is more important than quantity.

I'm normally 6ish, but every now and then will have a long catch up sleep.

this week I have given up smoking and this week I have not slept a wink. I used to sleep for hours although that was probably more being unconcious than actually sleeping.

I sleep as long as our 2 young children let me! Now at the stage where a wee power nap in the day is needed!

It varies, depending on work. On average, though, 8 hours is about right. I used to liek to allow myself to sleep at the weekends, but it made the rest of the time harder.

My usefulness when awake is equally poor, whether I've had 10 hours or not been to bed....

I need 8 or I'm dead.

I've been on 5-6 and my brain is struggling to do basic math and I have to stats analysis in my job.

I think it's more important to go to bed at the right time e.g. 2300 and 6hrs sleep rather than 2am and 6hrs later at 8am to get up leaves you dead.

It would be interesting to see what time folks go to bed and get up.

Lightweights and big girls blouses, the lot of you.

Try working night shifts and long day shifts over 20 years or so, the idea of a 'routine' or a set amount of sleep is laughable. Add in three kids and see how you feel...
