Supply:
– 1 x dusk till dawn sensor
– 2 x PIRs
– 1 x Dimmer switch
– 1 x shaver socket
– All required cabling

Fit:
– Install 5 x client supplied exterior lights and wire 4 up to the dimmer + dusk till dawn sensor and the remaining one on a switched PIR (existing wiring in place but an additional permanent live needs adding to power the new PIR)
– Replace 1 x PIR on another existing exterior lighting circuit
– Cut hole, fix shaver socket and wire up (wiring already chased through)

I have a bill (including VAT) which I think is about reasonable, but I am interested in the collective's thoughts.

I’m not a sparky but have worked in construction industry. Day rates about £200+. I would say that that’s easy less than a days work for a sparky plus apprentice, but also want a profit so double that plus vat I’m saying £480.

Probably need a bit more information on

(existing wiring in place but an additional permanent live needs adding to power the new PIR)

Also what brand of material will make a difference, MK will likely be three to four times the price o the cheapest alternative and rating of the dimmer switch?

Labour? likely be a full day as an estimate - hard to be definitive without seeing the job, which presumably the guy who has priced it has actually seen it, and the travel time.

Allowing an eight hour day plus two hours travel gives ten hours.

hourly rate could be as low as £15 or as much as £50 depending on location etc

material likely around £150. Yes it could be a lot cheaper or a lot more expensive and the guy will have his mark up on whatever prices might be available on the web.

Too many variables, get 3 quotes and pick the guy you like/gets back to you when he says he will.

There is a switched live and neutral to an outside light but I wanted a new light to be operated by a separate sensor which needed a permanent live to it (otherwise the PIR wouldn't work if the switch was in the off position as there would be no power to it).

The operation is that the light is activated by the PIR when in the 'off' position on the internal switch and permanently on if switched on via the internal switch.

Too many variables, get 3 quotes and pick the guy you like/gets back to you when he says he will.

I have had the work done and have the bill - they came to see it last week and fitted on Tuesday of this week.

I'd have thought the time to ask would be before commencing work, it's a bit late now. Is the bill wildly different from the quote you accepted before they started?

I didn't get a quote upfront as they have done work for me before and FWIW, I don't think the price is too high, but just wanted to sense-check it as I don't get lots of electrical work done so a bit out of touch.

The cost (inc. VAT) was just shy of £360 (£98 + VAT was the materials, £200 + VAT labour) all in (two guys, both fully qualified, at the house for about 5 hours so that tallies up with the above time estimate).

That actually sounds cheap. I’d not complain.

Ok so you have tax and NI, so take 25% off, then you have all of the training, certs and tools to buy. You have insurance, business running costs, vehicles etc. You pay yourself a day rate and the profit goes into the business, if there is any...

I am not complaining, I was just wanting to sense-check it as it is a while since I have had such work done.

Happy that people are in agreement that it was good value 🙂

I appreciate that, I was saying if I was charged what you were, that would be perfectly acceptable to me. I wasn’t suggesting you were complaining. Sorry if it came across differently.

Sounds good value to me. Id have no issue with paying that for work by qualified and experienced trades.
