Hi all i have been told today that my 1998 mondeo will cost £600 to have the clutch replaced this seems bloody high to me can anyone tell me if im being told a lie here
If this is the case im gonna lose my car as im not paying that
Car's worth a lot less than that! Seems steep. Is that main dealer or backstreet Stavros Garage stylee? (Friend of mine uses a chap called Stavros to keep his ancient Polo going, cash in hand, gov, etc)
That does seem very high. My tame mechanic wanted £500 inc vat to fit a clutch and new flywheel to a mk2 mondeo i had.
Call round and get some more prices. About £300ish would be normal for a clutch.
what engine is it?
A clutch kit will be about £60 - £80.
Then just find a good local indipendant garage to fit it. You should be able to get it all in for under £200 fairly easily.
its a 1.8 zetec other than the clutch the car has given me many trouble free years
The price is probably about right!
I have just had mine done on a '99 Vectra
Kit cost £150
Local garage fitted it for £180 as hes a mate
Lots of cars have a fancy bearing on them now, think its called a concentric clutch, but could be wrong on that!
If you decide to have it replace dont just replace the plate, do it all at the same time!
I have probably just doubled the price of the car having it done 😉
but everything else works fine and is much cheaper than buying another motor.
Aye, about £60 - £70 for a decent kit. Then just the labour to fit. It's not a massive job for a good mechanic, they'll have done loads.
Go to someone who is reccomended by someone you know.
nigew - you've been had I'm afraid. GM stuff is even cheaper.
Zedsdead-Doubt ive been done, he is a good mate, i bought the parts myself online.
I had both the clutch and concentric part replaced, there seemed little point in just replacing the clutch plate and then having to take it apart again when the rest went.
Not sure, but I think that might be correct, in that it's a big job on the Mondeo. I recall doing everything possible for a few months (before getting a new car) to avoid having my clutch changed. I think this was because I was told it would be expensive, so I drove my old Mondeo without using the clutch till the end (apart from standing starts and changing down gears).
John, that's about the going rate for that operation, but not only do you have a complete clutch fitted but also new flywheel. Your car is fitted with a dual mass flywheel and it is more than sensible to change both at the same time. Hope this helps. G.
You'll need clutch kit and a slave cyclinder. I paid £143 for my Focus. Then my local back street garage charged me £180 for fitting - quite a lot cheaper than the £550 Ford dealer wanted. - shop around - or use it as an excuse to get a nice new motor.
Mondeo clutches are expensive because you have to use a special jig to lift the engine out to get at the clutch, petrol or diesel. Its the labour cost and not just the cost of the clutch parts. My mate who owned a garage hated doing mondeo clutches. It has been known in the trade for people to cut out the footwell and get at the clutch that way and then weld a plate back over!
I've heard of quotes around £500 before and that was a small garage not a dealer or anything, so yeah the price isnt too far out.

I thought that was on the 6 Cylinder versions as the front beam has to be welded back on. But it's difficult to get to on the 4cyl apparently. Bloody hell!
I aligned my clutch with a mop handle once...worked! (non mondeo)
95> mondeys have a hydro clutch too. Is he replacing the fluid and piston?

get an independant garage to fit it www.goodgaragescheme.com, and it will be well under £200.
hmm, that eurocarparts link doesnt seem to work - just go to www.eurocarparts.com and enter your car details - instant online prices
apparently the sub-frame has to be partially removed from the front to get the clutch out. As has been said, its the labour.
Theres plenty of people getting it cheap, but the sub-frames haven't been re-assembled properly.
juat be glad it's not a tdci. My 03 plate one needed a new clutch, which also means new Dual Mass flywheel, new release bearing (6 speed) etc... £800 from a local garage and it was the cheapest I could get it.
Like I said, find a decent garage.
It's an easy job. There are plenty of folks who can't be bothered doing it though. But that's a different story...
And as for DM fly wheels - that's just another con. A regular can be fitted in place of it.
I used to be in the trade and still have a lot of contacts who are.
Like I said in a previous post you can now get standard clutch kits to replace the dual mass clutch. Its a hell of a lot cheaper.
the clutch is not dual mass......
Does anybody know if the later 2000 to 2007 mondeo's have that subframe in? Thinking of buying a 2.0l petrol estate and having to shell out big bucks for a clutch change would possibly put me off.
a mate of mine has spent hundreds on his Mondeo. The turbo went and he had to pay a lot for that to be replaced. When he moaned to the garage they laughed and said wait till the clutch goes then you can moan....
Wouldnt say a dual mass flywheel "is a con" - it has its reasons for existing, it is a good idea. Sure a normal fly would work too but it wouldnt have the same benefits that's all.
Had a chance to get a few other quotes today best offer i got was £200 all in what a difference its a place in the midlands that does clutches and gearboxes
coffeking ,what is it a dual mass clutch does that a normal one doesn't (my C5 doesn't have one but the higher powered one does?)
