Don't you end up going backwards and then take off?

You'll be lucky to do walking pace.

It's not just strong it's gusting, so chances are you'll go over, under, into something.

I don't envy you!

OK, maybe 18 mph was a touch optimistic, but I am wondering how to calculate how long it will take - I can guess, but I want science to help me dammit !

Assuming you can ride at 48 mph in still air you'll be fine.

Might be just a touch easier as rolling losses might less. Say like riding at 47.8 mph in still air

I could take the car that my wife is driving to the same place - but where is the fun in that ? 😀

I think you could safely describe this plan as 'character building'.

Put the bike in the boot and ride 200km home with a 30mph tail wind, that's the fun bit. 😉

Well according to the link IanMunro posted, if your normal cruising speed is 18mph, then it will take you 22 and a half hours (at 5.5mph). Good luck!

(of course in reality the actual speed of the headwind you're riding into will almost certainly be less than 30mph - thats the sort of wind in which it's impossible to ride at all)

Maybe I could ask her if I can do both 🙂

The way the wind has been lately you'll be doing about half your normal cruising speed if that...I can normally do about 18-20mph for 200W but have been looking down lately and seeing 220-250W for 10mph, soul destroying stuff! It's worse if it's gusting too as you're constantly changing gear trying to get a nice rythem going and basically failing.

A forecast of 30 mph is unlikely to mean 30 mph headwind for a cyclist. Wind speeds are measured well off the ground (~10 metres) and there will be hedges, walls etc to hide behind.

The point about the height windspeed is measured at crossed my mind earlier too.
Turns out there is a model for it.
Using it the 30mph turns to 22mph at cyclist height.

Looking at wednesday the weather does look a touch better - only 10 to 15mph winds, so should be doeable

Festive 500 may just be a consideration !

It'll take you as long as it takes you. Beautiful things don't need to look for attention, so just shut up and do it.

Where are u riding from/to. Going by your post you sound like you are riding due south..but wind is likely to be blowing from west or nw for much of UK.

Derby down to Chieverley Services on the M4 - so yes straight south - hopefully it will be a side wind - which creates fun all of its own - Northerly would be nice .....

Mate, just don't be stupid if conditions are bad - too many stressed and possibly drunk drivers this time of year, one bad gust of wind could ruin your Christmas.

And I'll pass on the photos, if that's OK with you...
