I've never needed to unlock a phone before, how is it done? I've upgraded my phone (changed network) and want to use the old one (motorola defy) for riding with. It's locked to T-mobile.
I mentioned this when I was cancelling the contract and the guy said to take it to a shop in the high st - Thought it would be something T-mobile could do as the phone is now off contract.
Also, once unlocked, is it likely that I can put my new sim card into the old defy and it'll work? Or are sim cards locked as well?
AFAIK SIM cards arn't locked. But if you try to use a 3 or 4G SIM in a 2G phone it won't work.

Exactly that. Your old carrier should do it.
are sim cards locked as well?
SIM cards aren't locked as such, so long as the phone carrier ID either matches it or is universal.
Depends on the company, some get a bit funny about unlocking phones, others are fine, depending on whether it's out of contract or not. O2 don't normally lock phones, except for iPhones, for example, and will happily unlock an older phone, like they did with my iP4.
SIM cards arent locked but phones usually are...
you could see if any decent phone shop has the software for your phone to unlock it...but if not you will need to contact t-mobile and ask them to do it for you...i think they charge £20-25 for this
once this is done you should be able to use any SIM card in there but be aware that if its not a 3G handset then a 3G SIM card wont work on it
