I was watching the Foo Fighters - Austin City Limits episode on IPlayer last night and the show was chock full of old blues and rock acts that had been in the show through the years. A complete eye opener in talent i had vaguely heard of but never intentionally listened to.
Right now i have Gary Clark Jr on YouTube. Holy mother of god now that's what i call music 🙂
How do you find new music?
I find it terrible!!
I look at similar artist suggestions on youtube, spotify (when it was free) amazon etc. I almost never read or seek out reviews, the music press seems as bigger load of hype and b.s than bike mags. Very few current bands worth a shit, but there's plenty of classic stuff out there to seek out.
Spotify & pandora radio
Triple J
Double J
just listen to any radio station that is playing good music
Google Music radios and to a lesser extent 6 music
Spotify, 6-music, radio 1 specialist shows.
Mainly Internerd Blog sites. (Oh, and I have discovered some through STW.. )
Mostly 6 Music, Soundcloud and the stuff* that @DezB posts up on the "its friday and I am bored music thread". that and chit chat in the pub with muso mates.
*some of which is an acquired taste...
Nice one guys, had spotify on this morning listening to some really good stuff. Stevie Ray Vaughan at his best 🙂
Its very easy to get in a rut with everything in life and finding some music gold has cheered me up no end.
I find most of my music from film soundtracks, but then I do watch a stupendous amount of films.
Spotify radio based on artists/songs I like, or suggestions it makes to me. It's pretty good - thrown up a few bands where I've gone and bought their CDs.
if only for the accent binners
new old music.
+1 on some of the stuff that DezB posts too!
I subscribe to a dozen or so music blogs and i listen to perhaps 8 hours of podcasts (Music and others) at work every day through headphones, got mates in the music industry -dj's/producers so i get regular updates on stuff they are doing or music they are excited about and i listen to 6music and a few foreign online radio stations. Also browse a lot on Soundcloud/mixcloud.
Never used spotify or stuff like that,
These days generally Radio 3 and going to concerts.
By checking out different sites such as Pitchfork, Clash, Tiny Mix Tapes, Mojo, Uncut but then mostly ignoring the reviews and making my own mind up by listening to them myself. You can stream samples on some of these sites or just YouTube them to make your mind up.
Also by listening to lots of podcasts whilst I am at work and taking note of tracks/bands I like. Shazam also comes in handy when hearing tracks whilst watching tv shows/films.
I am a great believer that here is just as much good new music out there. You just have the same passion to find it as when you were a spotty kid with a ghetto blaster/patches on your denim jacket/posters on your wall. That said the majority of the stuff that hits the charts these days is sh1te.
How about Radio 1 and Heart FM? 😆
Radio 6 and Deezer for me.
Music blogs & long, nerdy conversations with mates of a similar inclination.
I am a great believer that here is just as much good new music out there
You don't have to believe - its a FACT 🙂
You don't have to believe - its a FACT
Yip I'll agree with that. Think what I was (somewhat clumsily) trying to say is that when people claim that all new music is dire and that all old music to awesumz they just couldn't be @rsed looking anymore.
Suggestion sites like this can be an easy way to find some new bands based on your favourite bands.
Speak to people about what they like generally - i get an album a week recommendation lol
In recent times definitely online content, eg sound tracks from Mountain Bike and Ski Movies. Plus my daughter's boyfriend's band are good even if I am not in the target age group demo-graphic
Adult Jazz
Handsome and Gretyl (Trans Savoie/Provence? sound track)
Bella Ruse (Trans Savoie/Provence? sound track)
First Aid Kit (just heard them last week on ski movie, bought album and concert tickets for 2015)
Alex Clare (read something online, going to see him tonight)
If Pete Guy (from Jedi's blogs) stuff was on iTunes I'd buy it, currently just listen on SoundCloud
After a couple of years of not particularly actively seeking out new new music (just kind of picking up the new Bonnie Prince Bily, Cat Power, Bill Callahan, etc.) I have discovered a few this year.
Firstly I started occaisional listening to 6 music where I happened upon the Sabina album which I love.
Secondly I've had some recommendations from friends; Sharon Van Etten (although I had already heard a couple tracks on 6 music) and Warpaint being the most notable.
Thirdly, I have an occaisional squint at the monthly music press, pitchfork and label websites the likes Drag City and Domino.
Lastly I've swapped memory sticks with my dentist which, somewhat surprisingly, has proved quite fruitful... Need to rig up my sonos again soon so that I can give thema proper blast.
Oh, and lastly lastly I've discovered the odd gem on here, the last being Bjorks Declare Independence which I can't believe I missed (already having a fistful of Bjork cd's) so thanks again DezB. Video is just brilliant...
Mainly BBC4 documentaries for old stuff or 6Music for new stuff tbh.
Not that I care anymore (used to be a terrible music fascist, now reformed)
I've swapped memory sticks with my dentist
If that's a euphemism, I'm struggling to grasp it.

somafunk any chance you could list out a few of the music podcasts please?
+1 somafunk - you seem to have similar taste in house music to what I used to enjoy.
I have to listen to a lot of modern pop music for work and the quality has gone up a lot the last few years tbh, some real top-notch tunes getting to No 1...
If that's a euphemism, I'm struggling to grasp it.
hehe, no, its strictly factual 🙂 I gave him a stick with a stack of music on it, he gave it back with some different stuff on it. Sorry to disappoint...
Oh, that reminds me, last year I happened upon a film on YouTube about minimalist avant garde classical music (via Brian Eno's FB feed of all places) which netted a good 6-10 new albums for me.
Same as somafunk really, SC, discogs forums, blogs and records like redeye, boomkat, bleep, beatport
Blogs: IA, Dummy, Rinse, FACT, mnml.nl, Beats in Space etc etc
My 11 year old son too, he's dj-ing better than me now.
Edit: how could I forget boiler room

what I was (somewhat clumsily) trying to say is that when people claim that all new music is dire and that all old music to awesumz they just couldn't be @rsed looking anymore.
Actually, no. It stands to reason that the majority of good music will have been produced in the past. If like me, you like hard rock/metal/heavy metal, a genre that's been around since the mid sixties, then there's about 50 years of stuff out there to listen to.
I don't like electronic music. Pop/Dance/trance/house/urban/trance/jungle/garage/darkcore/ambient.....I find it all shit. It irritates me. So for me a lot of new music is awful.
That's not to say that there's no good new music, but the stuff I like is pretty derivative, generic , formulaic anyway. I am ok with that.
I love finding "new" bands to listen to but I'll admit, I don't put much effort into it. As a thirty something married father of two I have far more important things to do than dredge through mountains of shite to find a gem. If I was a full on muso, I could understand how you would be passionate at seeking out new stuff, but not me. I am not hip, cool, trendy etc and have no desire to try to be.
Yes, the majority of good rock/metal/heavy was produced in the past.
Point is, there is NEW music, not just new bands.
I get your point, but for people really into the ever-changing state of music, there is loads to discover.

To me that is similar saying that the majority of action films have been produced in the past so I am only going to watch old action films. Your point is accurate but the attitude behind it slightly defeatist. There are good new bands producing hard rock/metal/heavy metal.
If I was a full on muso, I could understand how you would be passionate at seeking out new stuff, but not me. I am not hip, cool, trendy etc and have no desire to try to be.
I also have no desire to be hip, cool or trendy. Some may see an inherent link....I don't really care as I am just interested in discovering both new bands and new music to listen to.
Soundcloud and mixcloud.. 4 or five hours every evening usually turns up a few interesting new tracks, and a good few more old ones..
I also subscribe to half a dozen blogs or so, a handful of record labels and a couple of dozen music related FB pages
http://thequietus.com
Is my main source of inspiration for checking out new and old music these days. Especially the Baker's Dozen feature.
Anything that piques my interest - today this [url=
beauty popped up on Facebook,

Good God - is Morgan James hot.... 8)
Used to surf aquariusrecords.org new arrivals and back catalog and listen to snippets as they have so many genres and a mad keen lust for music - then I head to youtube. Haven't visited for ages must do again. I also find youtube channels of artists I really like and then check out their fave lists. listen to Radio 6 too.
One of life's greatest pleasures/luxuries for me (when the house is finally snoring and the wee small hours are creeping up ) is to lie in bed with youtube and go on a music quest, you never know where you'll end up. Often serendipitous.
Albanach, depending on your preferred style of music you may find my choices a bit shite, 😀

Some really good links on this thread, especially yours Somafunk. I know about half of them so the other half is going to keep me busy for while. Cheers.
You could also try looking at the record labels that your favourite artists/producers are releasing on and then have a listen to the other stuff they have been releasing on that label. Discogs.com is a good place to find record label catalogues.

Good God man, get a grip on yourself! Being passionate about and enjoying good music doesn't make you a 'muso', whatever one of those is, it makes you someone who's passionate about, and loves music for the emotional thrill you get from it.
I'm 60, and I get a huge thrill from finding new music, and going to gigs when I can afford it, which can often result in discovering new artists supporting the main act. I found The Joy Formidable that way, supporting Howling Bells.
My main source of new music is via 6Music, and Uncut Magazine, who's reviews are always well considered, and the fifteen-track CD of sample tracks that comes with it is a great way of filling up an iTunes library.
Listen to various 6Music shows, like Lauren Laverne's, Radcliffe and Maconie's, Cerys, Tom Ravenscroft, and any others that catch your fancy, and if you've got a smartphone install Shazam and tag stuff for future purchase.
And enjoy! 😀
Just to echo count zero, I took 'new' music in this context to mean 'music previously undiscovered/unheard by the prospective listener', not 'what is hip/trendy'?
I hazard a guess that (like me) most of those who love music care about finding stuff to listen to because it is music that moves, impresses, suits a mood etc, not caring about the decade or century it was made for any other reason than seeking a particularly good example of a genre or a likelihood of catching the music performed live.
I haven't ever cared about what other people think about what I ride, what I listen to, what I watch, and am always looking out for something new, something old...something good.
Forgot to say, I discover a lot of great stuff by following musical 'family trees', or enriched my own experiences and listening catalog by having my ears opened from one genre to the next.
When I was young I was sold solid on rock music, mostly heavy, but Santana for instance switched me on to Latin and African rhythms, and from that small seed I discovered a literal World of music from Fela Kuti to. (more recently ) Tinarawen.
I think really there are no real music fans who want to be 'seen' listening to stuff, unless they are very young and desperate to impress equally shallow fakers. Music is a truly transcending art form, it's a language that breaks down barriers, a passion, and a discipline - and it surely deserves to be explored as fully as possible by anyone.
There is a Pitchfork plugin for Spotify, so you can read the review and click directly to the music which I've found pretty useful.
... Cont'd
Electronic music similarly, I trace my own introductions back to my childhood listening to Thomas Dolby, even Vangelis , right through Einsturzende Neubaten, Deadstock, 808 State, FoL, Orbital, Eat Static, Orb, then deep house, and again other ambient, progressive techno ie Gas, Underworld etc.
I think really there are no real music fans or musicians (like many here I fall in both camps) who want to be 'seen' listening to stuff, unless they are very young and desperate to impress equally shallow fashionistas, that's a phase all teens go through on their rebel journey. It's simply a gateway and once through the gate music is a truly transcending art form, it's a language that breaks down barriers, a passion, and a discipline - and it surely deserves to be explored as fully as possible by anyone. If someone looked at my collection and said 'oooo you really try and be 'different' don't you? To them I would say - ' projection bias at it's finest'. I can't understand limiting music tastes any more than limiting food tastes.
I think really there are no real music fans or musicians (like many here I fall in both camps) who want to be 'seen' listening to stuff
One of the truest statements i've read on here for a while, music is music and getting hung up on genres and specifics is rather pointless.
Viva music…. 😀
internet radio and soundcloud for me
6Music (specifically Marc Riley and Cerys Matthews), Radio 3, XFM for normal pop music and the amazing selection at the world's best record shop, Piccadilly Records.
I think really there are no real music fans or musicians (like many here I fall in both camps) who want to be 'seen' listening to stuff
And as for those DICKHEADS!! who say ooh obscure music... "obscure"? MEANINGLESS!!
