I've still got loads of old vid tapes and want to throw them out, however there is loads of footage of '88-'92 House, madchester and other stuff I'd like to keep. Trevor and Simon, Harry Enfield, Mary Whitehouse Experience and other bits and pieces.

Anyway, do you need a special video recorder/player or is it just an old video player, special cable and some software? I'm thinking in terms of You Tube or copying to DVD.

It's more straightforward than I'm thinking then.

Yep. Buy the lead, press play on the video, press record on the PC. Probably illegal, though ๐Ÿ™‚

EDIT: I just posted a random link from google above, probably worth doing a quick check on what leads are good.

I use one of these -

End quality is pretty rubbish, you don't realise how bad videos were until you look at them on a PC.

Doing copyrighted stuff might be different but it costs peanuts to get stuff digitised now e.g. http://www.ness-scan.co.uk/

Unless you've got a lot of stuff, it's easier than buying some crappy dongle and doing it yourself - imvho.

Oh look, there's a handy webpage telling you exactly what you need and how to do it:

I bought the recommended StarTech cable after reading the reviews of some of the cheaper ones having problems.

I'm open to offers on the cable now as I've done my lot if you're interested.

If you're using pre-recorded VHS videos, you'll almost certainly need something that can strip Macrovision. If it's stuff you've recorded yourself, then essentially you just need a video capture card / box as others have said.
