Sat here contentedly in my little bubble, conscious that there must be people nearby who need CVid assistance, but no idea how to find them.

Clearly going round knocking on old people's doors isn't going to work.

I'll have a Google and phone up Age Concern.... But does anyone have a view on other ways to find how I can do something useful?

Thanks

We popped a note through a neighbours door who we know is vulnerable. She was grateful. We now have a whatsapp for the street. Not sure how you would find random people further afield (or if that is even a good idea). Maybe just help out other organised groups. We have a few family members who are sewing up bits for the NHS (if you want to chip in you are welcome sewing-scrubs-and-laundry-bags , they are also collecting old duvet covers, as is another aunt in Essex or maybe there is something more local and personal to you). Get on Facebook and I'm sure you will find something local

Wow! That bemyeyes idea is great!

OP Facebook seems to be working well near us. There are new groups setup which seems to mitigate the issues you get with the 'local moaners groups'.

Alternatively, print yourself a few postcards.

I keep looking at my old school bookshelf and wondering if I can setup some kind of secondhand book delivery service. I know there are some villages using old phoneboxes but that does not work at the moment, so maybe a book or two delivered in an old carrier bag that people can either leave alone for 72 hours or take in a disinfect as they prefer.

Another idea I am working on is offering basic gardening services (mowing lawns mostly) for people who can't do it them selves. This needs preprepared Comms so that a garage/shed can be left open at a set time, I can go in and mow the lawn (only touching the lawnmower and fuel-can/plug) and then leave the mower back where I found it for them to lock up again.

Luckily for me I am still working at the moment, but if I do get Furloughed I will put more effort in!

One good thing about this crisis is that it is reconnecting and rebuilding communities. There's several fantastic wee community groups which have sprung up during this crisis, you'll find most of them on local fb pages. You could email your local councillor, they'll most likely have a list of groups helping out and people requiring assistance.

I received a letter from my local council this last week within which was a phone number and email for those who wanted to volunteer their services to assist vulnerable people within local communities.

As above ^ perhaps contact your local council?

You could join facebook with a false profile and delete it in a few months when you are done.

I reluctantly joined Facebook about 11 years ago (for a voluntary project I was working on) and actually treat it like a personal diary. I have very few friends, and privacy/security ratchet up to the max. It's fine 🙂

We’re posted notes through a few elderly neighbours doors with our phone number on.

One couple were very grateful and called to say thanks, and they would probably ask for some help at some point. So far we’ve only given them eggs, milk & bread but said to let us know when they’re short.

One guy called and said thanks, but he won’t be needing our services, he lived through the war and thinks the world has gone mad. He son drops around a couple of times a week and he gives his car a run for 20 mins every day. No idea where he drives to.

And another couple posted a card back saying thanks but she’s got her guru looking out for her so they are fine 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’ve also signed up to the volunteer pages on Red Cross and volunteer Scotland, not heard anything back yet though.

Our neighbourhood watch were promoting this group: https://covidmutualaid.org/

Might be worth seeing what they are doing in your area?
