I've just discovered a dodgy looking invoice that my elderly Grandma has been given recently. It has nearly £700 of vat added on it. Now this invoice doesn't have an invoice number nor a VAT registration number on it. How can I find out if she's been done or its just a lax invoice on the 'tradesman's' behalf?
I'm a bit concerned as you can imagine.
Thanks
HMRC Tax Office.
I'm not aware of anyway to check from the name of company if they are registered. You could phone HMRC. However if you have a number (which I think they have to tell you on request) then you can check it is valid here: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/tools/payinghmrc/vat-ref-checker.htm
Or ask them for a proper receipt see what they say.
There are specific items required for it to be a vat invoice and the two missing things you mentioned are on that list.
I would be inclined to ask the supplier for a proper vat invoice. Is the vat amount right in the context of the invoice - ie 3500 ex vat, 4200 in vat?
Worth remembering that some small trades people are genuinely pants at paperwork. No excuse but...
