Since Hotmail became Outlook, I kept getting told that they can't connect me to Outlook, try later. Even signing out then signing back in doesn't make any difference. Can't access my e-mails even though I can see them sitting there.

Is it just me or is anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks. 🙂

I'd try clearing cookies and cache and try again.

Yeah, Hotmail's been as ropey as a pirate ship since switching to Outlook. Sporadic long delay once password has been entered then emails frequently inaccessible. Very annoying.

Fine atm however.

delete cache and cookies, and update your browser. New outlook/hotmail seems to have issues with Firefox and Chrome for a lot of people.

wordnumb - yes exactly. Incredibly frustrating isn't it. Just done some clearing so hopefully that will help.

Thanks again. 🙂

Yep, GF has the same problem - seems very unreliable. Also it keeps wiping all her contacts from her iPhone and I have to restore the whole lot from a back up. This happens once every few months....

Try a different browser, as others have suggested, even if it's just as a diagnostic step.

What AV / "internet security" are you using?

Are you using a bookmark? Try going directly to hotmail.com or outlook.com by typing it manually into your address bar.

Try changing the "http://" to "https://"

Long shot, but (re)install Silverlight.

I use outlook.com on a number of PCs and tablets and smartphones, no issues getting in at all.

Yes I've had that yesterday, not really checked it today, using Firefox.

An update ... still having problems! Sign in eventually and can see mail there but unable to open due to 'can't connect'. Cache/cookies cleared, also tried manually typing in Hotmail.

Today still having problems so have now uninstalled Silverlight as per Cougar's suggestion, then reinstalled it.

Fingers crossed. 😕

Just been on the Forum for ideas and trying those. It's a right pita.

Hotmail/Outlook is generally pretty unreliable for me too. About 50/50 chance of it fully loading at any given time, I’d say.

Incidentally,

Are you getting any other symptoms? A malware scan might not be a bad idea.

How about trying to update Java?

Whilst good advice generally, I'm not seeing how that would help; I don't recall seeing Hotmail ever touch Java.

Cougar - no other symptoms. PC had a thorough and expensive investigation around 8 weeks ago.

Been looking on the website, done a couple of things including some browser check/fix, also reported it. Loads of people seem to be having all sorts of problems on their forum.

This has only been happening since the Hotmail/Outlook switch.

I visited a friend on Sunday, who usually drops a computer issue on me when I visit, and she was having a similar issue on her iPhone. The problem is that she runs a hotel/restaurant and her business email is a Hotmail one!
She doesn't seem to grasp that Hotmail is flaky, and really ought to use something else, which is more reliable.
I said she should get another one, but she's got contacts all over the world... 🙄

Hotmail's fine for me, I've used it for years. Must just be flaky on the Mac.

I had to tempt fate.

We can't connect to Outlook at the moment. Please try again later.

There's trouble at t'Internet at the moment anyway. Spamhaus are getting a DDoS kicking from a spam group and it's having a knock-on effect all over the place.

Just tried my 2 email accounts, first one wouldn't connect. Tried the 2nd and that was fine then tried the 1st one again and all was good.....It's not enough to piss me off yet just a bit annoying.
Using Firefox.

Still having problems even though I've installed Chrome. This is absolutely doing my head in now and reckon I'll need to change.

Keep getting told that they can't connect and try later. Even if I sign out and sign back in there is no difference.

What's Yahoo like? Anything else besides Gmail?

granny_ring - oh no, poor you and I feel your pain. 🙁

It's weird. Had a good few days where I could access e-mails whenever I wanted to. That did not last. Am back to seeing e-mails sitting there but unable to open them. Even logging out and then back in doesn't make any difference.

Jeez, I'm in a right bloomin' mood. 👿

For the last few hours I've been unable to even log in to Outlook. It really is a pile of crap.

PC bloke will be here tomorrow anyway with hopefully a fixed monitor so shall ask him. Mind you, the rate I'm going with rising blood pressure and palpitations will be lucky to see morning!

Beer o'clock soon me thinks. 🙂

Just thought I would resurrect this ...

How are users getting on?

I thought service had improved but has reverted to being a pita. Usual problem of e-mails sitting there but unable to open them. 😐

varies..

Mostly OK for me...

I've found that using a different browser helps. I VERY rarely have an issue opening a mail etc on my Nexus... which makes me think it's not a hotmail issue but an Application on my internet browser issue.

mine has been ok on the pc and laptop...but its the app on the phone that's the problem....since updating to outlook a few weeks ago... its had moments (quite often) when it would sign itself out and then ask me to sign back in....this takes ages and several attempts....not had the problem for a few days so maybe its sorted itself out...

Hit and miss for me with Firefox, sometimes it's fine and sometimes you can click on a message or folder and nowt happens. Sometimes, a refresh fixes it.

I'll have a go with a different browser, see if it's any different. Wouldn't surprise me if it's fine in IE.

Variable. I'm not convinced that it's down to browser because it will often work flawlessly, seeming to wait for important mail to come in before throwing a huff.

Cougar, I'm on IE and its no better, click on a email and find its not talking to you. Shuts down at least twice a day on me every day.

Still a mix match of OK / pita responses. Three different PC's on home and work networks. FF & IE and different A/V & proxies.

I've had problems on PC with it taking forever to bring up emails, not being able to see attachments on emails. Idly on my Windows Phone hitting reply has sent the email to everyone who has been in the email trail.

It all worked fine before and looked better to IMO

Outlook got a little better for a while, then Microtoss announced they were abandoning account linking, now I can make a cup of tea in the time it takes to log in. That's make a cup of tea from scratch, including buying a kettle, tea bags and blending hydrogen and oxygen 2:1 for the water.

S'alright for me. Occasionally log-on and get the can't connect message, but click connecty and i'm straight in.

Chrome at work, Mac at home +iphone. No problems tbh.

Glad its not just me.

Spent half a hour trying to send an important email this morning.
Working on my phone but not on my laptop, both ie and firefox same wifi.

Of course it is now working fine a hour later FFS.

It works ok most of the time but I don't really understand why outlook is so slow and flaky at times. I rarely had any problems with Hotmail before the switch over.

Mine has been fine up until the last week and now it's really, really slow. Sometimes it doesn't respond at all. This is across multiple devices and browsers/clients.

On the bright side - it means I spend more time here on STW:

*Log into Outlook*
Read STW for 10 mins until Outlook fires up.
*Click an email I need to read*
Now looking at the third page of STW threads...
*Attempt to reply to said email - computer says 'cannot connect'*
Type long whinge on STW about how rubbish modern life is. Search "what tyres for duff email provider".

Oop! - we're logged in, gotta go.
Back in a mo'.

I seriously think Outlook is getting worse by the day. If I have to keep looking at those five wee white markers flying across the top of my page while I wait for an email to open/delete, or do anything else, I think I'll scream!

I've persevered with the new Hotmail /outlook but have finally given up. Set myself up an account with my IP and set the Hotmail account to auto forward all emails. Transferring contacts turned out to be quite easy and I've added a signature block at the bottom of all emails I send which says 'please note my new address.'

I honestly think Microsoft have purposely made it rubbish to drive people away!

For some real fun, try changing your hotmail password - it asks you to " type in the image characters displayed below".... But there is no image!. Im now convinced Microsoft are purposely trying to get people to stop using hotmail for some bizarre reason, otherwise they would have sorted this by now

It's patchy and variable, but it is free 🙂

I'm on it and tbh I find it quite amusing the folk who complain about something that is free - if you are unhappy go elsewhere.

I access my hotmail through the Mail app on my Mac. There's never been a problem.

Perhaps using something similar on your PC would work instead of using the browser.

...and blending hydrogen and oxygen 2:1 for the water.

Which, whilst occasionally entertaining, isn't a particularly lengthy task...
