Setting string lines up for gridlines to get steel cages nice and accurate is a ****ing waste of time! Putting the waterproof membrane lid on an attenuation tank is a ****ing waste of time!

**** off wind!

I currently have a job with 18 Mastclimbers on two blocks of multi storey flats , right on the sea front.

That's gonna be a waste of time this week.

From a purely selfish riding point of view, I'm a bit worried about the winds predicted this week. A lot of the trees have grown very leafy and 'leggy' this year due to the hot spell (although some had started to go into 'shock' and drop their leaves early to retain moisture). Whatever - there are some top-heavy trees about at the moment - let's hope the fallers don't come down across nice bits of riding. My local stuff is fun, but very limited and is under attack from being sold off to private buyers / 'developers' etc.

What's the maximum wind load on mastclimbers then perchy? Presume they just get lowered and strapped down when it's windy. Never had a job with one on, presume they're mostly on inner city tight area jobs?

But as you say on a sea front up in one of those....after you!

It's not about the windloading as much but you can't operate them at gust speeds exceeding 34 mph as a maximum. We build in a safety factor and won't use them above 26 mph.

They are a bit wibbly wobbly even when it's calm . It takes a brave sort to go up when it's breezy.

My lad is on a student placement on Bute, middle of the amber warning patch.  He's just sent me a pic of his stove and stack of wood he bartered with the sawmill manager for a leg of venison. His accommodation is a draughty single glazed bothy on one of the estate beaches. should be an entertaining night.

its Velo South on Sunday and Windguru are showing torrential rain and gusts to F9 all morning , so worse than Ride London this year . I am happy to say I am not taking part . I will however be windsuurfing.

Met Office and Yr not shoowing anywhere  near as much wind or rain as of yet , so will  wait till  my usual 24hr beofre it happens to feel uber smug

Heathrow weather station is saying the peak gust today is 40mph, we just had one come through though that I swear was more, one of those where you can feel the gust coming down and actually pushing you into the ground!

On the east coast many trees have been turned into match sticks.

It's still blawing a hoolie but is sunny. Jacket is packed away on standby rather than necessary.

Moderately amusing moment today when our CEO from Salisbury / office in Winchester suggested it was too windy to our Orcadian born Scottish Director, as the gusts rocked the car at Stirling castle...Scottish director merely did up extra button of her jacket without saying a word to CEO and walked off, while asking me if I was going to the beach at the weekend...

Lad texted me at about 10am to say it was nothing spectacular, then again at lunchtime to say the estate was being blown to bits, the woods and policies closed to the public, ships off their moorings in the firth and all manner of mayhem. He was off out this evening with the rifle to make some more venison..there's loads of trees down and he isn't going to be short of wood this year.

WRT Heathrow, don’t forget aviation wind is in kts, so 40kts=46mph. I’d expect higher gusts on the coast.

Also, BBC sensationalises, so them saying “70mph” probably really equates to 40kts actual wind, with odd places of local funnel effects seeing 70.

landing at Gatwick was a bit sporty in the worst of it - they had scheduled to close the main runway for maintenance , landing on the emergency runway. It has very little lighting, so hard to judge crosswinds - lots of a/c performing “go-around’s” as the crosswinds were right on limits, with a low cloud base too.

I dodged a bullet.  I was due to be in Glasgow Wednesday with a colleague, but my priorities changes so I stayed down south & dialled in whilst he flew up.  Fine from Heathrow to Glasgow, but his experience of Wednesday sounded horrific.   He doesn’t mind flying, but he said people were looking nervous on the runway as you could feel the force of the wind on the tail.  The take off was horrendous with a low speed plane being thrown about a lot, 5 mins flying time and they turned back due to “weather” to have one of the worse landings he’d ever experienced - he said the forces on the plane where stomach churning. Trains were cancelled so he had to stay up there.   Glad I stayed, that would have put my confidence backward - but on the positive side, look at what a commercial jet can achieve in extreme circumstances!

@ BikeBouy . I will  wave  from my window as they  go past   Looks like  foiling wind speeds to me .

Velo South cancelled , Shame as the locals  who tried in vain to get the event stopped with court actions will see it as  a victory . Amazing amount of vitirole from the ' nothing in it for me' locals, who might have had to park 1/4 mile away if they had to use their car, oor wait 4 hours . I suspect the event would have been disrupted with tacks or protests . + one of  the descents  ( to South Harting ) is a 40mph blast to Lh then Rh corner on broken surfaces and would have removed alot of riders  from the event

We went up Blencathra in the middle of storm Ali, was a bit bracing. There was a group of six Yorkshire lads who went off to do Sharp Edge, which was  a bit brave / stupid (although it was sheltered from the worst of the wind by the summit itself). The lack of Mountain Rescue vehicles when we got back to the car suggested that either all six died or they all made it back ok.
