Son is going to Hong Kong in the next couple of weeks. He's 21 and pretty sensible. He'll be there for a week (yes I know!).
Any recommendations on where to stay, places to avoid, things to do etc.

We stayed in Kowloon near the star ferry terminal, was only there 3 days and didn’t think it was long enough . We visited Hong Kong park, Victoria peak, big Buddha and macau. Lots of food market places too

If the weather is reasonable this is worth the time. Takes about half a day.
Hong Kong is the Bladerunner future we were all promised. It's a great city, despite the Chinese shenanigans. Just wandering around the Kowloon side or the Island is a massive sensory stimulation for a first time visitor. The only tourist things I wouldn't miss are the view from the Peak at night, wandering round the high level path from the station looking down on the amazingly crowded skyscrapers, and seeing the laser light show from the Kowloon harbour side at night. He'll have great time, it's pretty safe compared to Western cities, cheaper and with fantastic food.
Everywhere felt pretty safe when we were there, and that was at the time of the political riots.
Getting a boat across the bay is a good and very cheap way of seeing the city. As is going on one of the street trams.
I enjoyed going to mid levels to ride the escalators. And there’s lots of temples to go and see as well. We stopped near the race course which had lots of cheap places to eat. 2nd draft for decent selection of beers.
Went years ago, pre China time, with the original quite scary airport! We loved it. Some highlights included getting the public open top bus which ran round the island, seeing the racecourse and Jumbo floating restaurant. Went to the peak, great view, mega steep tram up to the top.
Star Ferry is great at night, the buildings looked amazing.
We tended to spend a lot of drinking and eating time in Someplace Else, under the Sheraton.
Don't get on the wrong ferry, pissed, late at night....

Night markets in Kowloon. Get on the rickety old trams on HK island. Mid levels escalator. And at 21 have a night in Lan Kwai Fong though I think it's somewhat different and tamer to how it was when I was out there at 25 in the 90s. Remember Lamma island was nice and very different to the rest of HK.
