When putting the power down in 5th and 6th the revs rise but there is a lack of power to the wheels, then after a short while it will suddenly catch up with the revs dropping down and power returning to wheels. Almost like when you wheel spin in the wet and then when you get traction the revs drop back down.
Could this be a clutch fault, or dmf (from some googling around)
2009 CRV cdti with only around 85000 on the clock.
Sounds like a classic clutch problem but I'm used to older cars to be honest...
Same in our cicic. Same engine, prob clutch. Dual mass fly wheel will mean lots of cash to change. However, you could just be careful and don't step too hard on gas in 5/6th, shouldn't need to anyway in 6th.
Ours has been slipping for at least 50000 miles
Downfall of that engine unfortunately. If you have a look on the civinfo forum you will see many tales of woe, a few clutches only making 20000 miles before slipping. I brought a second hand civic cdti and the clutch started slipping at 80000. I changed just the clutch shortly after at a local mechanics. That was still fine when I sold the car at 120000 miles.
We had this in our 2009 Civic, similar mileage to yours. The dealer that sold us the car 12 months earlier denied any knowledge of the clutch problems (when we were agreeing on price) and said it only affected the heavier CRV which was rollocks (and I knew it but we wanted the car anyway)
So we were second owners and out of warranty, but it had full Honda history at that point. The dealer was slow to resolve the issue so I spoke to Honda UK, they agreed to book it into a local Honda garage where they would take a look, and if it was premature failure they would replace the clutch and flywheel as 'goodwill' and charge just two (or four?) hours of labour at the warranty rate (which wasn't much at all). I told them I wanted to see the photos they take if its deemed not premature failure.
They pulled it apart, found there was plenty of friction material and hence got it all done for a £100 or so. Very happy.
Its done another 50k since and it regularly gets a heavy foot in 5th and 6th to check if the problem has coming back...all good 🙂
Hmm, superfli is it not a catastrophic failure at some point then? My wife drives it with the kids in and I'd be worried about her getting stranded somewhere (not worried enough to pay for breakdown cover though).
Spooky, I did have full honda service history up until this year! Although we are second owners. Honda were starting to charge silly rates for services and the final straw was a 700 service charge and we had enough and went independent last year. Probably no chance of me haggling with them now. I left them bad feedback too because they were totally impossible to get hold of on the phone and never able to give any straight answers.
Isnt it a case of clutch and dmf need to be done together though mudhead?
Yep it's a weak clutch pressure plate on that engine. Really annoying had it on my Accord. Don't know what the CRV is like but on the Accord you had to drop the front subframe to get access. Think Honda did an updated clutch pressure plate. DMF could well be fine.
As said, very common with 2.2 CDTi. I think the clutch and dmf were underspecified for the torque the engine puts out so they all seem to go wrong anywhere from 20k-100k.
Mines been slipping intermittently for the last 4 years. Not sure if it will eventually fail badly but I imagine worst case is I have to ease it to a garage.

We have a 07 plate 2.2 Civic owned since 2009 and about 20k.
I am sure ours has always done this with me only realising this year that it was a likely "feature" of that engine and clutch.
We have put 110K on the car (original gearbox and clutch) with the car doing 80miles daily. Appropriate use of 5th sees the slipping happening occasionally in 6th. I'm sure at some point it will require looking at but then so would a normal clutch with 130k on it I guess.
Had it at 20k miles on my 2006 Civic - thought it was actually supposed to be resolved by 2009, but maybe didn't get resolved on CRV until later.
2007 diesel CRV here - like few above it intermittently slips and then stops - more likey due to my driving. When I behave it isn't an issue, 2nd owner don't think previous had it done and it's just passed 200k miles. Am holding out see how long lasts 🙂
From memory when my Accord had the problem @ 120k miles it was worse if the ambient temperature was cold.
Peter1979 Honda will tell you they need changing together and have a fixed price plan with this repair for the civic. My mechanic told me the DMF was fine and I sold the car 40000 miles later with a fully working clutch and DMF. When I had the clutch changed (3 Year’s ago) Honda wanted £350 for the clutch change and £750 for the clutch and DMF change. I got the clutch done local for around £200.
Yeah prices from independent garages have dropped on this from what I've read.
Glad I'm not the only one sweating the asset!
Mines an 2010 Civic so definitely not fixed before then.
