Aquaintance A said something that could arguably be considered homophobic. [1]
Aquaintance B called him out on it.
Aquaintance A responded by saying he was Bi and therefore he couldn't be homophobic.
Aquaintance B verbally stumbled around a bit but ultimately didn't feel he could make his original homophobia charge stick.
I've no idea if Aquaintance B was telling the truth but the whole idea of there being a homophobia trump card made me smile.
[1] Whether it was or not isn't the point.
I'm not scared of anyone's house.
I’m not scared of yellow cartoon men or Greek writers.
I'm not scared of pigeons that can find their way back.
I like chips.
In other news, I know bi people who have a really toughtime from bi-phobic homosexuals.
Anyone can be a bigoted. Being a bigot is non-gender/race-specific. It's called being a bigot.
Once had a [s]heated[/s] drunken verbal debate with a 'right-on' type who sadly attempted to defend her argument that 'black people can't be racist'
I pointed out that if taken at face value, then her argument was the very definition of 'racist'. Beer had been im ibed so this went back and fortha bit. I eventually dismissed the argument as was getting nowhere. In hindsight I think she erroneously believed that 'racism' was defined solely as 'white people being prejudiced towards 'black' people'. As if all 'black people' are the same 'race'. Or that no white person can be 'racist' against another white person. Like Germans vs Poles for instance.
Ye gods humans are stupid.
I'm scared of Trump.
I guess it is a similar argument as the one I posted about Chris Rock on Friday (and his use of the N word).
I'm scared of being burned to death 🙁
So am I.
Oh, wait. Kerning error.
I'm not scared of words which sound the same but have different meanings.
I'm scared of homophones
I reckon if he was really homophobic, he wouldn't be quick to say he's bi. Also, any hole's a goal so get in there.

This has made my whole week.
I was at a house party when I guy described a recent hilarious incident when he and a friend masturbated each other in bed. Careful not to judge we just asked if he was gay or bi, which he fervently denied. We tried to tell him it was fine if he was but he passed it off as just a bit of fun and hey "we all masturbate and suck our mates off don't we!".
It was a very weird conversation. He was a youngish guy, early 20s iirc maybe it was his way of testing the water about coming out. Still strange.
Biscuit Jimjam?
Homophobia Trump. Is that Donald's cousin from the deep south?
Oh, wait. Kerning error.
Nice work.

Brojobs! Brojobs! Brojobs! Oi oi oi get the lagers in Dave
Oi oi oi get the lagers in Dave
From the sounds of it, lager is not the only thing that Dave is getting in him.
He might not be homophobic, but he could still say something homophobic in a moment of thoughtlessness surely?
Or that no white person can be 'racist' against another white person. Like Germans vs Poles for instance.
Where's ninfan when you need him?

That's really what I started the thread to explore. Does his own background excuse a thoughtlessly homophobic comment. If it does what level of Bi-ness do you have to be for it to be ok? A currently practicing Bi person? Someone who watched Gay porn once?
Does his own background excuse a thoughtlessly homophobic comment.
No, any other questions? (I mean real ones)
What on Earth is a "currently practicing Bi person"????
Rachel
Presumably he meant someone who is actively engaging in sexual relations with people of both genders.
Presumably he meant someone who is actively engaging in sexual relations with people of both genders.
This.
That is an amusing lack of understanding of being Bi. It is perfectly possible to be in a monogamous relationship for many years without somehow losing your Bi sexuality.

Like, right now?
I meant it to mean someone who is currently having sex with people of both genders.
currently, as in right now? Hell what does it make you if your sat alone?
allthegear - MemberThat is an amusing lack of understanding of being Bi.
He meant within the context of someone using his bi-sexuality as a get out of jail card for homophobic speech. It seems fairly obvious.

Not quite proficient yet, so they're starting at the bottom.

Indeed. In fact I'm sure there are 100pc gay people who live their whole lives in marriages with people of the opposite sex. I'm equally sure there are people who live their whole lives in a gay relationship who are 15% straight, and every combination you can think of.
I think, for a lot of people, sexuality isn't binary.

😆 Well played.

Eh? Is this now a 50 Shades of Gay.
Completely OT, but this seems to be the sexuality topic of the day and so far discussion is fairly sensible. Imagine there's an article in the local paper about a Pride event, the picture for which is a group of people dressed in different colours forming a rainbow. All but one of the people in the picture appear to identify as female. What preconceptions would you have about the sexuality of any of the people in the photo?
I wouldn’t.
It would be difficult to draw any correct conclusions. Doesn't mean I wouldn't subconsciously do it, though.
Sounds a fun event! 😀
Rachel

I just assume everyone wants me to shag them.
If person B lost the argument he may as well go out blazing by making passing reference to showers and soap and get out of there, refusing to shake hands as they go...
Doesn't mean I wouldn't subconsciously do it, though.
That's what I was thinking, hence I reckon Drac is lying. I'm interested in preconceptions even if they're not ones you'd consciously make, let alone express.
I might as well admit I'm the only person in the pic identifying as male and curious about what other people might think!

That you're going home alone?? 😆
Rachel
Perception of the words used by A (bi or not) by B meant that the comment was seen to be prejudicial.
That you're going home alone??
😆 not that you'd need to make any assumptions about sexuality to guess that!

Don’t worry he’s not, I’m really wouldn’t be thinking. “Hmmm! I wonder what their sexually is?” Why would I?
On a sexuality thing we had a press release about a Bi-Sex awareness thing in Oxford with a working title of Bi-Visibility. All very tongue in cheek but they got the message across. 😀
Bi People can be homophobic. I know a gay guy who “hates poofs” oddly, but what he means is he hates overly camp people.
It’s also completely possible to be a minority racist.
My SIL claimed for many years not to be gay, despite being in a long term relationship with a woman, she’s wasn’t gay, she just loved one women, she’s wasn’t Bi because she didn’t fancy men, although she dated a few before the woman, she didn’t fancy other women other than the one she was with. I think a lot of that was guilt from her catholic upbringing, she’s gay now and married.
ChapeauIs this now a 50 Shades of Gay
In hindsight I think she erroneously believed that 'racism' was defined solely as 'white people being prejudiced towards 'black' people'.
Well, she has a point - it depends on how you define racism. It's possible for anyone to make racist statements, however only black people suffer from structural racism in the West (and most places really). So it's possible for an individual black person to be racist towards an individual white person, but that's different to the racism that black people experience from society as a whole.
As a white male, I can laugh off sexism and racism towards me. It's not so simple for people who aren't white and male.
Really? What about gypsies?only black people suffer from structural racism in the West
And gingers?
And Asians?
Probably three years ago now I yarned to some cold calling Jehovah's witnesses and ever since they've come round every month for an hour or so, cup of tea etc. even though they know I'm not going to join. They were quite put out that "their kind" were some of the first rounded up by the Nazi's but don't get mentioned. "Those glory seeking Jews" she said..
Aren't Jehovah's Witnesses just hardcore Christians?
"their kind" were some of the first rounded up by the Nazi's
Although:
Unlike Jews and Romani who were persecuted on the basis of their ethnicity, Jehovah's Witnesses could escape persecution and personal harm by renouncing their religious beliefs by signing a document indicating renouncement of their faith, submission to state authority, and support of the German military.
I'd take that over Treblinka every time.
On a sexuality thing we had a press release about a Bi-Sex awareness thing in Oxford with a working title of Bi-Visibility. All very tongue in cheek
Good a place as any to start I suppose.
Really? What about gypsies?
Okay, I should have phrased it as "white people don't suffer from structural racism".
