Having issues with the new wifi network in the house. Using MacBook/iPad/iPhone the wireless drops connection and it takes a switch off of the router to get the devices to reconnect but then it'll disconnect again shortly after. I have spoken with the ISP and I've changed the SSID and the channel selection from 11 to 4 but it still happens. The message on the screen of the iPad and iPhone is "unable to connect to network" and the message on the MacBook is just "connection timeout"!? It's a Zyxel NBG-416N router...

Any help much appreciated!

Is there some sort of power saving on your devices that makes them turn off the wireless cards after a certain amount of time, or if the device is idle?

There never was before on the MacBook or iPhone as these were used for a long period in my father I laws house and we never encountered the same issue. Not sure about the iPad as its pretty new. Any idea how i would check?

Firstly check if its your WiFi or your modem/broadband signal. Connect your computer to your modem via a network cable. If all is OK off the network cable then its your WiFi, most likely interference causing it to drop out. Channel selection is the only thing that can really help you here but unforutunately you're very limited to only 11 channels and they overlap. Try this:-

On your Mac click on the apple symbol in the top left. Select 'About This Mac'. Then 'System Report', then on the left hand side under 'Network' click 'WiFi'.

On the right of the screen you will see a list of all the WiFi networks visible to your devices. Under each there will be some information. Look at the channel number. The channel frequencies overlap so try to select a channel that is as far away as possible, ideally 2 away from any other channel e.g. if your neighbour is on channel 1, try 3 if thats free.

If you can't i.e. all 11 channels are taken up, then you are, most likely suffering from interference from your neighbours WiFi networks. Also if you've got a wireless phone, that could also be causing interference - in fact all wireless devices in your house operates on the 2.4GHz frequency so there are many potential sources of interference. I had this issue, tried a variety of brands of router with no success. I ended up going for a dual band router and working off the 5GHz frequency and all has been 100% stable since.

Hi wobbliscott - I checked the wired connection and all is running perfect with the cable connected. I used the cable connection to change the SSID earlier this evening.
The Supported Channels are 1 thru 13, 36,40,44,48,52,56,60,64,149,153,157,161,165

The nearest neighbour we have is around 40-50 metres away so doubt it's interference to be honest??

Bugger, sorry, worked for me. that is about the extent of my WiFi troubleshooting i'm afraid - but based on the experiences I had when I was having problems the various helplines, googling and self appointed computer experts at work, its not far off their limits of knowledge too.

The only other thing to check is if you've got the latest firmware on your router. You could also try using a static IP address instead of a dynamic one. That didn't work for me, but seemed to feature heavily in the advice I received.

good luck.

Where is the router located, and what physically lies between it and the iFruit devices ? Is there anything big and metally near the router/devices ?

Have you applied any updates to the router ?

Are There any updates available for the router that you have not applied ?

If all else fails, you might have to upgrade to Windows. 🙂

There is nothing in the way. The router was only installed by the ISP on Tuesday so I assume it's updated but how do I check? Windows is barred 🙂

Windows is barred

What does this mean, you can't get onto the router via windows or you use a different OS other than Windows?

You can check if your Firmware is up to date by logging (preferably on wired connection) on to the Zyxel NBG-416N using the router IP number (should be on a sticker on the bottom of router or on router box somewhere), default username/password is admin/1234

Have a look around through all the options until you find firmware page, maybe on "System" or something like that, there'll be a check firmware button/link somwhere - press it and see what happens.

I'd borrow a wireless router from somebody and see if the same thing happens, if it does then the problem isn't the router.

Did the Zyxel come from your provider? If so send it back and get a new one. Personally I would replace it with a Linksys.
