I've got 2 Panasonic hdd recorders that are connected via wifi,but am looking to extend into another room but don't want anything bulky,would a roku or apple tv do the job
Yep, probably. My roku 2 streams from my pc fine.
Plus it does Netflix great too.

So the programmes are saved on the HDD recorders ? Can they transmit via WiFi to another device on the network ?
From what you say I don't think Apple TV would work, Apple TV allows you to download online content eg rent movies and watch youtube/vimeo etc, stream from your computer / iPhone / iPad. You might be able to do it indirectly by getting the programmes off the HDD recorder and onto your phone/computer and then sending them to the desired TV
