What could i use as a sledge?
i was thinking of a blow up boat? i have looked for a sledge and there are none left any where!!
Land Rover roof?
Last night we used the following:
- A cheap plastic sledge
- A car bonnet
- Thick bin bags
- A large tractor inner tube
2 baking trays. Feet in one, hands in another.
I would not have believed it, had i not seen it with my own eyes last night!
It looked ace.
wheelie bin lid
A large wok
tractor inner tube? i like this
Survival bag, the big orange ones.
mini bonnet (dunno about the new minis but the old ones were sledge of choice when I was a lad)
inflatables work well but are prone to punctures.
rubble sacks are ok if you're on a well used 'run' with compacted snow.
I made one from a pair of old skis. Its was super fast, but steering an issue. We went up to the Pentlands and launched off a cornice. My pal fell off, his leg went through the frozen snow crust and trashed his knee ligaments.
We couldnt find the sledge in the dark, it went for miles after losing its passengers. I went back next day and found it for fear of it killing or injuring someone else. I burnt it.
tractor inner tube? i like this
Why ? ........ do you happen to have a few to spare ?
a horse
We had a plasticky sign, the type with corrugated middle and it was the fastest thing on the slpoe (when laid on top, going face first)! 😀
ernie - in croydon?
[sarcastic voice]cant move for tractor tubes!![/sarcastic voice]
Got an old cast iron bath in the garden if you want it?
tarpaulin/groundsheet for communal fun.
Or make one out of wood and stuff.
Nick a For Sale sign?
I nicked a cushion off of my settee (thats a sofa if you're a poshy) one of the big square ones that are part of said settee, double wrapped it in plaggy bag and stapled open end so snow didn't get in (this didn't work!)
It was rather good and exceedingly comfy to boot! 😀
seem to remember a couple(?) of girls were killed when their car bonnet sledge went through a wooden fence last year, I think there was three of them on it and it got up to some crazy speed and they couldn't bail off it. careful out there. (ps a fertilizer bag will do the trick!)
im looking for a inner tube but cant find any!!
i like the idea of it being a bit forgiving
mini bonnet (dunno about the new minis but the old ones were sledge of choice when I was a lad)
when I were a lad me mates dad taught motor mechanics....
randomly he came home one day with the bonnet off a Maxi which he proceeded to Turtle Wax to a shine as bright as a bright thing - he then presented it to his son to go sledge on.....
swear to this day it was the fastest, least controlled thing I have ever had the pleasure of riding 😀
in harder times we stuffed bin bags wi snow......
Tractor tyre inner tubes are great - a mate used to have one when we were kids and it was brilliant fun. 3 or 4 of us piled on top, heads facing downhill - used to get up to some decent speeds, or it felt like it anyway!
a cornish surfboard...i have 3...
lol tommytowtruck...we did the same thing as kids but we use the innertubes in the water ..'Bolton Abbey' river...we sailed down the rapids in our innertubes...we had great fun every summer......
Buy a tarp from b and q...
or.. my favourite, is, piece of hardboard spray bottom with gt85 or similair. grip an upturned corner. WHOOSH
Inner tubes (big ones) were the idiot's toy of choice when we were kids.
Great in winter as sledges & in summer you climbed inside the centre and rolled down the same hill..
..then stood up, fell over & threw up! 😆
i cant find any inner tubes in croydon!!
Here is a good technique,
get two THICK plastic bin bags (not builders rubble bags as these have to much friction) walk to sledging destination and fill one bag with snow and pack it in then fold over the top then place the filled bag inside the other bag so the openings are opposite then sit on bag to mould to buttocks then point yourself down the hill!! wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
i cant find any inner tubes in croydon!!
Tonight, get yourself down to that building site round the corner from you 1111, where they're building that new Lidl. Armed with a pair of heavy duty tyre levers or big spoons, remove one of the tyres off the JCB .......sorted
I'm sure you can get a couple of "Addo boys" to help you 😉
Ernie- not my style any more!!
good idea though!!
my mate is having her birthday party tomorrow on the "slopes" of croydon so im looking for some thing.
too late ernie, it's been dark for an hour so everything's sitting on bricks at best.
If you didn't have mini-me feet you could have a go on my board 1111
not my style any more!!
Glad to hear it mate 😉
L-B ill bring some big socks!!
ill see what else i can get sorted for tomorrow
May head down to b&q and get some materials?
also had a chat with my brother (who works at kwik fit) and he has never seen a tubed tyre come in to his work. he has been there for 5 years!!
This took me a day to put together including getting the wood etc from B&Q and then left overnight for paint to dry. Has lasted me more than 25 years. Annual mileage is obviously quite low

i think i can knock one up in about 2 hours
Yeah well, I was 15 at the time and not allowed to use power tools. Had to wait for my Dad to come home
he has never seen a tubed tyre come in to his work. he has been there for 5 years!!
That's probably because he hasn't dealt with stuff like JCBs which get a lot of punctures.
I like that Blue Peter sledge silverpigeon .......and all in proper imperial measurements and all 8)
im going to make one , already for the weekend
It is truly ace.
Shame we've not seen any of the white stuff in Guernsey
i made one out of a david oliver for sale board! the kids over the westpark hill behind me are so jealous as nowt has beaten me down the hill, fast as ****, like clark griswald on his bin lid!
+1 (or whatever) for fertilizer bag.
One year we found an old 'American style' fridge, with rounded edges.
Anyway, the door off it was ace and two of us could fit on it no problem. The only issue was being rounded on all edges it used to spin, snow kicking up over the top of the door/sledge as it went.
Looked for it the next year and scratches on the bottom meant it had rusted out...
Happy memories.
A lad I went to school with had a sledge made for him by his dad. It was a sheet of prespex from a local DIY shop. His dad had used a heat gun to warm it and turn up one of the ends, in the same end two holes were drilled for the string. Being perspex the top was a bit slippy so they got some self adhesive stair grip tape from the DIY shop too and stuck that on. You can make any size or shape you want doing this and it seemed to go like a rocket too.
You could always get some snowboard wax for the bottom to make it faster too.
Fertilizer bags or as others have tractor lorry inner tubes, try a haulage firm they'll have one or they'll will tell you fits their.
I watched a young lad yesterday do without the sledge and go down the slope just stood up in his wellies. He even managed a small jump a couple of times.
off to fit a "ski" to the front of my bike today!!
will post pics later
Land Rover roof?

Well done L.B.
was a good night!! ill keep the front end for next year?
Body board, the best by far.
Last years action!!
O anything put inside a compost/dog food bag, goes like stink!!
I am still looking for a free set of battered old ski's for next years super build if any are going???
yeah, but lengthen the front a bit and it will be perfect
