Just for a bit of fun - which is best.  I fancy listening to this again as was wondering where to start.  IIRC the radio series came first and was then turned into the book.  I like Stephen Fry's voice but my memories are of the radio series

The radio series is also different in parts to the book.

I have the original radio one and it's fab.

Is it just me that prefers the Dirk Gently stuff*? I have certainly re-read them more.

*But NOT the TV adaptation - that was guff compared to the original BBC TV series of HGTTG

Eddies in the spacetime continuum?  There's five series.  3, 4 and 5 were recorded in the noughties.

The radio series and then all the sequels read by Douglas Adams. Brilliant! I listened to them so many times the tapes are mostly mangled now. I was disappointed to see the one available on Audible was read by Steven Fry.

Outside of J&W, Fry's voice makes me want to strangle kittens.

Radio version or GTFO.

Dirk Gently was fantastic- my introduction to Douglas Adams was a tape of him reading 'Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency'. Wonderful, and worth tracking down. Unlike so many authors, he knew exactly how to read his own work

Just did the first of the radio series today and was great.  Dates a bit but still a good listen.  Will have to hunt for a Douglas Adams reading next.

Or Fry, he did brilliant job with the Potter books

I never quite decided if Adams was developing his concept or trolling everyone the way the story changes in quite significant ways from one telling to the next.  I liked the books, but I was captured by the original Radio version.   I was quite impressed with how the add on three seasons managed to integrate the two.

Pretty much the entity of the second season was completely genius the Shoe Event Horizon subplot and the Old Man In The Shack/Ruler Of The Universe sequence are what really stay in my mind.

Although, the ongoing forum updates here do make me wonder about lemon soaked paper napkins...

As I understood it, Adams had serious writers’ block in the second series, John Lloyd having to bail him out for most of it. As a result, when it came to the books, Adams had to re-plot heavily, because most of the material wasn’t his.
