We will be in touch
I never knew it but my Pug isn't meant to idle around 1050rpm but more like 850rpm. How do I lower those? Do I need to as, as things stand, it work perfectly fine?
I've tried disconnecting the throttle cable from the lever but the revs wouldn't drop. All I know.
BTW It's the Peugeot 406 1.9td 90BHP (yeah, right) engine with new oil and filters (450 miles ago). Servicing it made no change. Weird.
What year?
Is it from cold or when warm? I had a 306td and I adjusted the cold idle valve (on throttle body) and it reduced. I might be able to dig out a how to from a forum I joined Once if that would be any help?
Sharki, 1999 but made in late 1998 really.
Taff, it's when cold or warm, no difference. If you could dig it out it'd be great. Thanks!
If this was on a Rover V8, I'd suspect the stepper motor/extra air valve.
As the name suggests, it's an electrical stepper motor that opens a valve to allow a bit of extra air past the throttle to increase the idle speed when cold.
It's unusual for the electrical part to fail, but the valve can get clogged with soot and not close properly.
As far as I know, all fuel injection systems use something similar.
It will be screwed in the inlet manifold somewhere and will probably look something like this.

Clean the plunger bit so it moves and seats properly. hopefully, that will cure it.
i dont know much about cars but i like to pretend i do.
does it have electronic engine management?
i know my (56) 307, when started on especially cold days, give the engine a bit more revs without me asking it to.
I Pressume its supposed to do that!
my work van does it to (09 plate Doblo)
[Edit]
throttle cable
im guessing its not what i said then.
Whoops, just read the TD bit.
I don't think diesel cars use an extra air valve. I know diesel trucks don't.
Hmm my navara has a switch for high idle revs (really good for defrosting in winter) not anything this simple is it?
The revs should start higher so the engine warms up quickly and then drop to 850-ish rpm after some 30 seconds. The old diesel drivers used to say start the engine, have a ciggie, then drive away. The throttle cable isn't perfect I noticed this afternoon, it might just need replacing or lubricating.
As it's a pre-HDi engine there isn't anything fancy, have a think and make your suggestion. It's all very useful. Thanks!
