I'm struggling to work out what speakers would be a good match for a 90s Sony ES series 'Audiophile' amp I bought recently. Although it's got bags of power - the sound through my Ruark 2way standmonted speakers gets way too 'bright' at anything above 25% on the volume dial, and it's very tiring to listen to.
Any thoughts on what similar era speakers I could go for which would give decent all round clear, quality sound?

Your speakers can't handle that power linearly hence you're suffering the effects of increased harmonic distortion. You need greater volume displacement which requires more cone excursion and/or area.

Sorry, but I have to draw a line somewhere so no, I won't stop listening to Maurice and co.
chiefgroove guru - so are you saying I need bigger cones in a bigger cabinet? Any recommendations, bearing in mind I'm on a budget?

Try and find some castle howards or a pair of ruark talismans should work well and cost little
