Our dishwasher went on the blink last night - it fills then stops after a couple of minutes. I tried switching it off and back on again and then it drains but then just stops again after a couple of minutes.
So it seems a bit weird - water is coming in and the pump appears to be working as it drains too.
I had a quick look last night (checked the filters and felt around in the water sump but found nothing that could be a cause). I am going to take a proper look tonight (check for blockages in the hoses etc) but does anyone have any thoughts / ideas on what it might be and where I should start looking?

Is it fully draining or is there still water in the bottom?
the one way valve flap by the motor is the first thing to check for debris holding it open. Also worth checking your drains it plumbs into are not blocked.
Our last dishwasher had a tiny bit of plastic off the clip of one of those dishwasher fresheners up in the labyrinth pipework up the side that was blocking flow and causing havoc. Eventually found it in an area hidden behind some sound deadening. Was playing havoc with the draining.
There is often a drip tray with a cutoff valve. To stop floods. My dishwasher had a tiny leak that would fill it in a week but wasn't a big issue. I used to fix it by turning the dishwasher upside down to drain it, but I got fed up with that so drilled a hole in the drip tray and it carried on working faultlessly for years. Drip was so small the water evaporated before causing a puddle.

Our Bosch did that just after xmas, tilting it 45 degrees reset the sensor and it’s been great since.
Give all the filters a good clean, maybe some drain clear through the hose. Sounds blockage related.
Slam the door really hard while swearing at it. That's what fixed mine

It must be good for upper body strength. Were you just know as John before your dishwasher developed a fault? 😉
Does anyone think it might be the circulation pump which has failed? A bit of Googling seems to suggest it might be that.
As others have said it has a float switch which can become stuck. I found our Bosch had another switch in the labyrinth pipework/plastic at the side which was gummed up. Took it apart and cleaned it out and that sorted it.
Tried the float switch thing - didn't work. I also got to thinking it couldn't be that otherwise it wouldn't part-fill anyway (if it was stuck surely it wouldn't fill at all, not fill to the overflow level and then stop).
So new dishwasher ordered – I don't fancy chasing around fault-finding as my *suspected* culprit is the circulation pump and at nearly £100 for the part (the machine only cost £220 new) it would be an expensive trial – especially if it then turned out to be the main board that has gone.

Good call. I ended up doing this as ours went down hill after all the messing around. The drip tray in ours was filling up due to the blockage that I eventually found.
The day the new one was arriving I was carrying it outside and managed to drop it on my bare foot, just as I was stood next to my safety boots. cost me my big toe nail that one!

Honestly, have you not given the filters a good clean & flushed it with drain unblocked? Mine does exactly as you describe when blocked.
can you not run a diagnostic cycle to give you a fault code? shown by the sequence of flashing lights?
My MIL's washing machine was cutting out (all lights off), could be started again by switching the isolator off/on again. Tracked it down to the isolator switch sparking; machine detects a voltage change and just shuts down. try bypassing the switch?
Filters cleaned several times, outlet pipe checked, felt around / get my head in trying to find a blockage and couldn’t find a thing. When I put it back together and tried running it it made other noises and generally sounded very unwell. Normally I’m okay with fixing stuff (saved our washing machine twice in the last year) but can’t see beyond a potentially expensive part replacement which still doesn’t fix the issue.
