Does anyone know of any useful place to find actual last-minute getaways? It's our wedding anniversary this weekend and we had a hotel booked for Saturday night but we've both had crappy weeks and we want to run away for a night or maybe two.

Lastminute.com was a wonderful idea a very long time ago, now it's just like every other stupid hotel/flight/break search engine that fourteen pages of Google throws up, regardless of what I type. I'm sure in the Good Old Days you could just walk into your nearest travel agent and say "what have you got leaving tonight?" but I don't even know where my nearest travel agent is any more.

Sawdays.co.uk started out as a great idea, a guy writing books about special places to stay, out of the way places that were often complete bargains because they weren't on the big lists. We've stayed in a couple of his recommendations and they were excellent. Now, of course, it's a huge popular website, meaning it's full of all the usual overpriced country manors full of tasteless tat and ****y spa/gym affairs.

So, given that it's Thursday night and on Saturday morning we'd really like to get in the car and just bugger off for the night (or maybe two), and we're not on a huge budget... what should we do?

Any advice appreciated. Including, I suppose, "stay home, save money and whinge on the Internet"... 😉

Booking.com?

Where do you want to go? Recommend Gent (great architecture, hotels, chocolate and beer) / Brugge (see Gent) / Ypres (see Gent, plus WWI stuff)...

In Britain - Cambridge? Bath? Cotswolds? Mendip? Peak District?

Depends where you're based...

eBay - now I hadn't actually thought of that, I'm searching now.

Where do we want to go? Anywhere! A last minute adventure! That's the trouble I've found with so many sites - they're just search engines for lists of standard prices, they won't give you options to browse through ranges of possibilities.

Based in London.

laterooms has a good search facility
http://www.laterooms.com/en/p1301/pv080602a/Hotels.aspx?LonLat=&sort=TotalPrice&hidfl=&k=somerset&d=20111015&n=1&rt=2-0&distanceUnit=Miles&currencies=GBP#wqutqi

see the 'place name' bar on the top off the white bit, click on area and use price button

good point, thanks gusamc - a buttload of generic chain hotels, but some really interesting others scattered amongst them!

Your based in London? How about just getting on the eurostar to Bruge or Paris with nothing booked. Wander round looking - see what you fancy and walk in off the street.

That will make it more fun than searching online.
