Hi all, after a bit of advice, the Fan on our Worcester Bosch Combi has started making a noise now I've heard WD40 on the bearings can help quiet this down or is it time for a new fan.

Cheers

This is a warning that the fan is going to die. new fan is about 70 quid I think, easy to fit. I've done three of the 4 boilers I own. When the fan stops the boiler will stop as it needs to detect the airflow to fire up so I would either replace it now or at least buy one and keep it until it goes. Its not gas side so no need to have a plumber fit it.

Thanks toys, I'll check the price of the fan, it'll be due a service to, have replaced fans myself and know that as it's a fanned flue boiler once the fan stops so does the boiler. May just bite the bullet and get the fan in ready for when it fails.

When our old boiler got noisy last year it got condemed as the flue had corroded & collapsed. End of November, just going into winter properly - Merry Christmas!!!!!

Have also had fans fail & boilers stop working, but this was a much louder noise & consisted of the boiler continually trying to re-ignite, as it couldn't run due to the lack of ventilation.

It also only got picked up when a british gas repair man came to fix the washing machine, saw a note on our record that we'd not had the annual safety check done, and did it for us.

To change the fan, you need to be GasSafe registered.

If you know what you're doing, fair enough, but get a safety check done after you've done it, £40 or so

A common cause of fans burning out on older Worcester/Bosch combis is a blocked condensate trap: water can't drain out of the flue/combustion chamber and knackers the windings on the fan (cleverly these are situated inside the chamber rather than outside on older ones!)
You can test this by disconecting the flue swanneck and pouring some water down the insides of the casing; check water flows through the pespex condesate trap.
I had three fans burn out on me and assumed it must be rainwater coming down the flue as I could see watermarks on the fan windings.
