I've got an .AI file that I can't open, (not even if I change the extension to PDF), and I need to check the contents, which are bike related.
Can anybody do me a favour and open it up and save it as something I can look at?

YEAH! Many thanks to James, that's what I need.
Let the re-spray project continue, now I just need to get some decals made up

Have a go at [url= https://cloudconvert.org/ ]CloudConvert[/url]. Will take AI files and convert to a number of formats (one being pdf.)

You can use inkscape too which is free and IIRC will open ai files.
