... who is, as I'm sure you've heard, a weatherman.

I've got an idle hankering to get one of those home weather station things, the kind that tell you how windy/cold/hot (hah, right)/rainy it is or has been. It's not for forecasting or anything, more idle curiosity as we do get a bit of weather where we live (on top a hill).

I've not idea what I'm looking for though really, and prices range from twenty quid up to thousands. I guess I'd be happy to pay up to, I dunno, £100, if that would buy something reasonable?

Any recomendations?

And, because it would be rude not to...

I have been idly considering one myself as we also live on a hill and can have different weather to a mate who lives just 500m down the road.

weathershop.co.uk have a large range of weather stations with an equally large price range. I'm considering one the National Geographic systems but need to read up on them before committing.

Any advice from users of home weather stations gratefully received.

I had a £100ish one a few years ago. It was OK. It had a few wireless sensors and  one or two wired as well (can't remember which ones) which while OK did not have enough resolution for my liking and data was not sent often enough. Wind speed in particular was irritating as gusts would happen in between readings and so the max speed was never accurate. It would create a massive log file full of stats that could be imported into a viewer and you could post them online for geeks enthusiasts to look at. That weathershop site is the best place for info and the Oregon Scientific ones were the best amateur ones when I had one with the Davis ones being the top jobbies. Mine was a no name cheapo but worked well enough.

When I was bored with a broken collarbone last year, I looked into these. I wanted something that'd integrate with Home Assistant. Many brands use the "EcoWitt" protocol which has a direct integration with HA, and some additional functionality via a couple of HACS add ons.

I spoke to Weathershop, and they weren't sure which ones would work natively.  Since then I've read a few reddit threads suggesting this one: https://www.weathershop.co.uk/5-in-1-wifi-weather-station-accur8-5100#tab-label-description is both a decent budget offering with solid integration (ie not having to go via a 3rd party site like weather underground).

Much as I'd rather buy from Weathershop, my preference was for the Ecowitt Weather Stations WS2910 which only seems to be available/ in stock at Evilzon.

I've a great place to mount it at the back of the big shed which as good wifi coverage and is out of the way of trees etc.  I'm not that bothered about the tablet, but I would put it in the kitchen so I don't get asked at least three times a day "what's the weather going to do later?" 😉

Never bothered in the end, but now kind of interested again as I'm building a brand new HA instance from scratch over dry jan and I'd like to get this integrated as part of that build.

Do it.

I have a Sainlogic Professional Weather Station. Friends run various EcoWitt systems.
Generally cost £150 or so. Budget an extra £20 for a pole to sit it on.

Have run this device for four years now and replaced the batteries once or twice. I feed to Weather Underground and Met Office WOW (it feeds to a base station display, linked to the Wifi).

Previously I ran a Maplins Pro weather station feeding into a Raspberry Pi. Occasional date blips were annoying and it required regular software fettles. When Storm Arwen took it out I decided a purpose-built kit was the way to go.

Love being able to monitor rainfall. Windspeed is are always a challenge but my station lives in an urban environment and so that's the weather I record.

PS: This December was only the equal-2nd wettest December in the last 4 years.
