Mrs deadly and I both have iPhones (4 on latest iOS) and one mac we use at home. If I enter something on the calendar app on my phone - it shows up on the calendar app on the mac at home. However, it doesn't show up on mrs deadly's phone. The same happens with her phone ie. she enters work booked in, it shows up on calendar on computer but not on my phone.

We've allowed this to simmer for a while as it was no biggie if we were both booked in or not. However, with childcare issues, one of us needs to be off on a Thursday and Friday every week and I keep getting asked (more often than not during the day when I have no access to mac calendar) if I can do certain dates and I'd like to be able to access the calendar on my phone there and then to answer rather than say "I think so"...and then have to let somebody down.

As an aside, Mac software is 10.7.5 (2,4GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM) - should I update to Mountain Lion (10.8.4 for £13.99) or will it grind to a halt?

I've tried arsing around with the calendar settings on both my phone and computer but can't seem the find the magic button to click to share our calendars across all devices. Anybody able to help?

Difficult to explain without tweaking the settings in person, but a few points:

1) Makes sure iCal is set out to sync to the cloud, and then ignore the "On my Mac" calendars (I've cleared these out and minimized the list otherwise you will see duplicates of everything).

2) In iTunes data syncing, for both phones, untick the local calendar check boxes, and make sure the details for the cloud calendars are ticked.

3) On your phones, make sure that you set items created on the phone go into a calendar which is syncing to both phones.

Mrs Pixelmix and I run a similar setup. We have calendars for each of us and a joint calendar. Our phones are set by default to create items in our personal calendars, but you can easily change that. This way, I don't have to get bogged down in seeing everything she is doing, but I know when she has booked in something which we are both doing, and I can see her calendar if I need to.
