I'm contracting without a clear remit in the team - kind of a minister without portfolio - which suits me fine, I get to do lots of different stuff and create my own work to an extent.

But yesterday and today I've done pretty much nothing. The people I report to know this - they know I'm waiting for them to give me the next brief but it's not the done thing to do nothing in too obvious a manner.

I've done as much t'internet surfing as a man can do but now run out of ideas...

Write a book? Read a book?
Both can be done a computer while still making it looking like you're working.

I contracted for BT for a while. I was dropping a build onto a PC, connecting it up onto the network, running a few tests, move onto the next site. I had about 30 sites to do in the North West. I went to Wigan, no PC, phoned up to see why, no PC's for any sites for two months.
"Just go there every day", they said.

So for two months, I went out drinking every weekday night, got in about three, lay in till about ten, meandered into Wigan stopping off at a cafe for breakfast on the way, read some books till about two, fell asleep, woke up, went home about four. On something like £200 a day which was a lot of money in those days. 😉

And then they renewed my contract to do the actual work when the PC's turned up!! I had more sex and fights in those two months than at any other time of my life. Brilliant!
