How would you describe the role of a person who has provided unoffical help and advice to a colleague regarding management problems, decision making, that kind of thing? Helping someone see where the problems lie with his bosses and how to make a decision and assert himself, providing backup in meetings that kind of thing.

Wingman is the bes tI can come up with but it's hardly formal...?

As it happened I didn't have time to change the wording before the call, and "wing-man" was acceptable due to the use of quotes.

My manager likes management speak.
