I'm looking for a decent Flannel shirt of the thicker variety for winter. To be worn over a base layer, so more of a shirt/light jacket hybrid. Probably wool not cotton based. I quite like some of the Fjallraven stuff but the choice is bewildering and difficult to guage what the material is like online. So looking for suggestions. Ta muchly.
Fat Face or Burgs overshirts are the way forward. I’ve got a selection in various weights up to proper shirt jacks that feel more like jackets. They’re double cosy now it’s getting to that time of year 😀

The Beardsmore is brushed cotton and not very heavy though (I do have one and it is lovely and soft) so may not meet requirement of the OP. I also have a Gylly shirt from Finisterre, it's cotton again, but midweight (thicker than a normal shirt) and the fabric weave is very tight which makes it warm and windproof.
I have a few of the Alpkit ones, have one on at the moment, they seem pretty decent and hard wearing

Most flannel shirts are mostly cotton - flannel is the soft weave rather than the check pattern.
I looked at the thick 'wool' check fjallraven shirt ("Canada" and was surprised how little wool there is in it (25%) and how rough it felt. It might be hardwearing but it didn't feel like it was going to be cosy.
I've got an old Howies padded flannel shirt I wear a lot, and a DHB one I picked up in the CRC sale that's really comfortable. I'd look at padded rather than just thick to get warmth for weight.
Superdry often have a good selection of padded or lined over shirts. I have one with quilted lining which has lasted me ten years or so now. Recently picked up a decent Borg/Sherpa lined one

The Barbour one(s) I have are very nice, but not as warm as youngest_oab's Rab or Dakine wintery warm shirts...

Fwiw Amazon basics line do a fine line of flannels for messing about in. I pretty much live in them. Pick them up for about a 10er. And oddly enough people do ask me where I got them.

Used to use fatface ones religiously but the quality is crap now and they shrink .
I find Portuguese Flannel make some great overshirts. They have a wool section as well as the regular cotton and cord offerings.

I use Oakley flannels for riding, they’re part of the snowboard range.
I have one of the Varusteleka shirts (albeit the red version) that ElShalimo linked above - its really nice, proper wool and made in Europe if that matters to you. I like that they make two version, regular and long, as I'm tall but skinny so could get a nice length without being baggy around the middle.

I'm a big fan of Passenger clothing and have a few of their heavyweight shirts. Their summer stuff is a big logo heavy but winter spec clothing is right nice.
Wool shirts are very nice and warm.

Yes, I went a bit late last time and they were sold out. I am going to get myself two of them this time. I like the pockets because they are "expandable" and easily fit my mobile. Last time they were on sale the price was around £95.

I haven't washed it haven't washed it very many times - because it's wool, it doesn't really hold on to smells, so generally if you just air it out it's ok to wear multiple days/weeks without feeling dirty. Also I'm normally wearing a short or long sleeve t-shirt underneath so it doesn't get very sweaty.
It says it's machine washable, but the few times I've cleaned it I just put it in warm water with some wool detergent and do it by hand. Then roll it in a towel and compress to remove as much water as possible before hanging it to dry. If there's any small stains I just use a wet cloth and scrub it off.
Only potential issue is that the forearms are pretty snug fitting, doesn't bother me but some of the reviews on their site mention it. I bought mine 4+ years ago though so they might have solved that with the current ones.

Uniqlo do a wide range of flannel shirts, mostly check patterns but a wide range of colours and type of check, also the weights vary a lot, from thin, almost office weight, up to really thick, snug ones that work well with something like a thick fleece or down gilet or denim jacket. I’ve got a flannel-lined Lee Storm Rider denim jacket, with a corduroy collar, that’s perfect with the Uniqlo flannel shirts I’ve got, and I’ve got a Uniqlo down gilet that’s ideal for wearing over the top. The shirts are all roughly £35-ish; I haven’t had any need to buy any for ages, I must have ten or more, ‘cos I seldom wear them through the summer.
The Americans do some things the best, Burgers, Diabetes, Petrol Stations and Flannel shirts.
Dixxon, Dakine, Carhartt (not Carhartt WIP) and Orvis all make nice Flannels. I'd love a Pendleton but apparently they've been bought and quality (but not the price) has dropped. Filson shirts are also great apparently but not tried them yet.
Can't believe how much some of you spend on shirts. It's making Rapha look cheap, and even Pas Normal seems quite good value in comparison.

Very well made. Zero shrinkage. Zero bobbling. Heaps of colours.
Best check out the website as they often have deals on lines that are running low (tbh they never have massive amounts of any colour it's a case of seeing what they have there and then). Try one, you'll be suitably impressed.
So difficult to get the weight and stiffness just right.
Mine are mostly a bit too thin or too stiff so they feel more jacket than shirt, but I'll keep trying.
Current favourite is a corduroy Uniqlo overshirt.

They are well made, lots of different designs and fast delivery. They do size up big though.
