After a recommendation on here I bought a Silverpoint last week

http://www.torchdirect.co.uk/category-29/silverpoint-pro-guide-led-head-torchbr150-lumen-output.html

Compared to the Gamma the light is superb. Twice the lumens output.
Not experimented with low beam yet, that is still very good and comes with an improvement in battery life.

Build quality not so good and no red flashing light on the back, which I always felt was particularly good for running on unlit roads.

If you could get the build quality of the Gamma and the light power of the Silverpoint that would be great.

I will probably take the small Knog red light I have and put this on the battery box of the Silverpoint.

I just bougth a cree LED bike light from ebay hong kong. has a bike mount and one for your head. external battey pack which i stick in small rucksack or pocket for running offroad during the night. hasn't arrived yet, but bought it on the strength of my mates one. was £25 posted, and should be about 800 lumens so loads to run on proper trails.

if you fancy it i can email link, but easy ebay search.

Terry I've got a Gamma & found it to be pretty weak. Fine for the money but pretty dim really. I recently bought a Princeton Tec EOS II on ebay. Cost a bit more (£35 ish I think) but it's brilliant. Way brighter, lighter weight, and seems really sturdy.

@Pedalhead.

How old is your Gamma? As it got a lumen increase in the last year. Still not super bright, but not weak at 88 lumen....which appears to be more than the Princeton.

ah mine is a couple of years old so perhaps out of date then. It's good for around camp or reading for example, but I could happily use the Princeton Tec as a head torch for riding my bike if I didn't have a Joystick already.

I've just got a smudge light and a head strap - hopefully going out for the first time, for a run down the canal path, tonight or thursday. I'll report back later

The Gamma weak?? really??

I bought one on the recommendations from this forum and have been really pleased with it.

Bit of a rant..

Personally think this quest for more lumens is getting out of hand. I have a hope vision 2 on the bike and an alpkit gamma on my head and it is more that adequate for even the most sketchy of night rides. Even downhill on fast singletrack through forest I've NEVER felt I didnt have enough light.

Soon enough we'll have restrictions on them if this carries on. I already have an idiot mate who has on more than one occasion nearly causes accidents with oncoming cars whilst heading out/home.

At the end of the day I want to go out, ride and comfortably see ahead, not light up the whole forest or become a menace to others.

I think we've already ascertained that the new Gammas are brighter than the one I obviously have. I wouldn't ride at speed off road with mine, and I am no lumen-obsessive.

Tbh i can live without the rear red light I rarely see cars unless i venture onto the slug to link up wee roads

What i want to be sure of is that it has no angle adjustment on the front as once i start runnin it ends up pointin at my eyes !

I have a petzl e-light which is fine in camp and map readin but nae runnin

Terry, the Silverpoint does have an angle adjustment so may not be for you. Having said that the one I have is so stiff it's difficult to move without fear of breaking.

It does have a small bolt that acts as the pivot which can be adjusted, in your case if you tightened it I would be surprised if were to move unless you hit a tree. (which should not happen of course)
