I've opened up quite a few 2006 imacs in the past. Its fiddly as hell but doable.

Do you have a bootable cloned/backup drive? If so, then can you boot from that?

I've looked at it on a few YouTube videos. Looks a bit intensive but possible.
Watch a few first before tackling the screwdriver option.

I've changed the HD in mine a couple of times - follow the ifixit walk through and it's easy.

It might be worth putting an SSD in. It's amazing the difference it's made - s'like a new machine.
