After a sudden and unexpected reaction against epoxy resin, which seems to have triggered a reaction against pretty much everything else - most car fuilds, most perfumed products, possibly acrylic paint etc - I have had to try and find some new hobbies.

All proper active things I used to do were cancelkled aftr an alergic reaction to gravity which scrfewed by ankle so I am trying wood turning again.

Anyone near Southampton who is having any trees cut down, particularly fruit trees, please let me know as I would love to claim some free lumps for me to play with. I am happy to collect and also pay with a candle holder, lamp base, bowl or anything else that is basically round. I don't claim to be good but I am keen and it saves me going mad with boredom.

Here are a couple fo examples of things I have done before and the big bowl I am working on now.

I hope you intend to up the dust extraction, as it sounds like you've become sensitized to , well epoxy for starters.

If you dont protect yourself against dust, you could become sensitized to that as well and your craft hobbies and interests will be over. It is too often overlooked the importance of proper ppe.

I reckon you've a proper extractor(not just a hoover) so buy one of these https://www.norfolksawservices.co.uk/products/machinery/dust-extraction/reducers-and-fittings/record-power-cva250-80-104-2-5-posable-hose-assem?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=295936863&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIkrGuodHakgMVT6RQBh3tIgzvEAQYASABEgJr5PD_BwE

BBit pricey i know, but its just an example, and a bit of hunting will find the same thing cheaper.

Another option would be a full lid powered extractor.

For turning, and routing i have the Trend lid - and yes also pricey 😉

It's a lot, but its a sound investment.

I have some smaller branches and a bit of trunk chopped out of a cherry tree yesterday

Not much of it but 2x 2 ft lengths about 4" diam and a few bits about 2-2.5"- not sure what wastage is like and whether you can make any use. I'm in Guildford so not a million miles away,  or if you were up this way

No, I can't, and it's only about four weekends away from paint in the moment. This leaves me with an almost finished car and about £1,500 worth of carbon fibre and tools in the garage I can't use. Fortunately, I think I found somebody who will buy the carbon fibre gear and finish it off the car as part of the deal, but more to follow in my YouTube channel, so obviously like and subscribe.

I have invested in a Positive Air respirator, altready had oversalls and gloves so hopefully will not be brerathing dust. With wood turning, it is mostly debris rather than fine dust so a  vacuum fliter duest extractor is not that effective. You get piles of wood chips and shavings being thrown onto the floor and surrounding area with only a little dust in the air. If you are sanding then you can hold a vacuum cleaner nozzle next to where you place the paper.

The clean up after an hour or so on the wood lathe got too much for me. Its like mtb-ing, a couple hours fun, then as long cleaning up afterwards.

Very therapeutic though the wood lath. Walking with the dog looking for some old fallen tree with some nice spalted timber; to turning it to show off the pattern was very satisfying. Everyone I knew was given various designs of candle holders, bowls, and vases to the point where they were probably avoiding me!

I still have some nice spalted beech/elm/oak stored in the garage. Plus some very good lengths of a sizeable japanese apricot tree I cut down couple years back, and an old plum tree with a nice purple heart through it ... maybe I`ll dust the lathe off again soon.

- I absolutely agree.

- I have a sheet that is behind the laith, pinned to the ceiling and floor, that catches all the wood chippings. This means they basically just fall on the floor, so cleaning up is brushing them off the laith and the table onto the floor and then swiping them all in the bin. It's not too bad. I think it helps that my laith is on a bench, which is on wheels, so I can move it out of the way to sweep up underneath.

- sounds lovely. If you don't brush off the lathe, give me a shout.

I know, hence the powered respirator. What I meant was that most vacuum systems will get clogged with the with the shavings, therefore do not collect the dust. I work with both garage doors open so there's a draught through the garage, which removes most of the dust. With a respirator, hopefully I should live.
