Want some ideas for pictures to put up on the walls, to replace the *ahem* not so politically correct posters that my housemate favours*

*it's like living in an A&A thread round here. LOL

Dali - Portrait of my dead brother

probably the most surprising painting I've ever seen in real life

Giger was responsible for the main alien design in the alien films I believe

First saw his stuff when I lived in Sarf Landon. Just waiting until I have 1) a house worth putting some of his work up in, and 2) enough money to actually buy some of his stuff.

Dunno if movie art floats your boat. If it does, and you prefer them with a twist, have a look at these Polish interpretations of classic movies:

Excellent excellent excellent. I approve immensely.

Emsz; please make this a regular thread. Not on a Tuesday though cos it'll clash with my Architectural Appreciation thread, but how about a Thursday? Maybe. Or a Friday? Replace the tired boring thread that ran out of steam some time ago. Yes; the new Friday A+A! 🙂

'Emsz' Friday Art Appreciation Thread'- each week could have different themes like the architecture one.

A picture I saw in the National Gallery in Oslo, by an artist called Erik Werenskiold.

[img] [/img]

The pic doesn't do it justice. I found it really moving, dunno why at all. I think it's cos it's just so human and real, just doesn't seem contrived in any way. It's just like a candid photograph, but it's a painting. Amazing. I like it anyway.

How about a bit of Bridget Riley. Quite hypnotic when you have a large print on the wall

or some classic 1930's French graphic Design. AM Cassandre for example. Utterly beautiful and very very stylish

Emsz - I've got a lot of original artwork up in the house rather than prints. It doesn't necessarily have to be expensive.

Find out the nearest University that runs decent courses in Fine Art, Photography and Illustration then go to their end of year shows. You'll get an amazing variety of styles on display. Some preposterous and silly, some absolutely wonderful. If you see something you like then make them an offer. I've picked up a few things like this.

You could try your local Barnardos or Help The Aged, etc. My dad's house is decorated almost exclusively in artwork and prints from Barnardos house clearances, and there are some real gems. I particularly like his lithograph of The Golden Fleece. He's got original silhouettes of unnamed 19th century dignitaries, huge Matisse prints, an amazing native American painted scarf thing, very detailed portrait studies in pencil, and a VERY detailed homage to The Arnolfini Marriage. I think the most expensive was the scarf thing, at about £15.

I see what what you mean about being photographic! I thought it was at first. Like Suerat?

Suerat didn't paint photo-realistically - he was an impressionist.
[img] [/img]

I have always liked (amongst lots of the already posted)
[img] [/img]

Although I am sure you really would need to have an original to truly appreciate it.

I was in Amsterdam Art Gallery (or was it the Louvre, I forget now) and really liked some of the miniatures - but that was more for the technical execution than artistic merit.

Binners -I like your style 🙂
