When he drove the Eaton Yale blue Escort such a talent, like Ari Vatanen without crashing
I remember seeing him driving the Quattro backwards Bellahoustoun park on the first stage yet still won the rally from 80th place, such was the dominance of the boring Audi

Gutted RIP. Great memories of my dad taking me to Dyfi forest and hearing guys like Mikkola thunder through in their Group B cars.

RIP Hannu, Absolute legend. Winning the London to Mexico rally in FEV1H that then spawned the escort Mexico’s as well as developing the Audi quattro s1.

Gutted. Lovely guy.
Audi Sport Quattro at Chatsworth at dusk, flames and acceleration like a rocket, F1 on gravel!
Unfortunately a Welsh tree attacked the car later that evening when rallying was proper and they drove through the night.
Hannu Mikkola was my dad.

I got his autograph outside The Cheviot pub in Bellingham during the RAC rally when I was a young lad. He was in the Audi Quattro. It sounded fantastic.

I was marshalling at a stage start (Ae I think) when Hannu first turned up with the Quattro. The grip and acceleration was mind-boggling compared to the Gp4 cars I was used to. Fondest memories though are of his drives in the Eaton Yale Escort.

That ages me. 🙁 I was first Group N 1300 in a Samba on the Welsh when Hannu won outright in the Quattro. Participating meant we never saw stars apart from at the start and end of the day, and we certainly weren't going to hassle the man even if he was often around. Like Roger Clark he took an interest in his cars and was with the mechanics.

He and Audi saved me a lot of money. I quit rallying as it took a turn I didn't like and couldn't afford to follow. Henri Toivonen's death upset me, which was a part of it too. Group B was the end of rallying as an accessible sport. So as above, "Eaton Yale Escort good", but I'll add "Audi bad".

Hannu Mikkola was my dad.

Err, I think you're being metaphorical but if not, condolences.
