Serious question
just watching a program on sky 3 about "winning" which is looking at what it takes to be a winner and whether being a "half glass full" or "half glass empty" kind of person matters.
Always considered myself o be a bit of a pessimist and a bit unapproachable and just wonder if it is possible to change these characteristics as i would like to be more positive and outgoing?
you have a glass? you're better off than me already I just have a puddle and no container!
I've managed it to a certain extent. I've stopped worrying about things too, as worrying serves no purpose whatsoever.
My brighter outlook happened to coincide with ridding a stressful job.
I never understand this - when you fill a glass, you fill it, so when you start drink its contents it becomes half empty, I fail to see how a glass can be half full.
I'm just going to sit on the fence on this one I'm afraid.
Far too worried and anxious about making the wrong choice, empty... full... can you even proove to me that, that's exactly half the amount that the glass can take?
What about if you only half fill it in the first place?
Half a glass is half a glass - how it got to that state is irrelevant.
So, is it half full, or half empty - you decide?
the glass really isn't the point but at this time of night i should have expected that!.
My question was, is it really possible to change yourself from being a pessimist to an optimist and how do you do it?
whether being a "half glass full" or "half glass empty" kind of person matters.
Depends which side of closing time you are. Oh, it's a metaphor is it...
is it really possible to change yourself from being a pessimist to an optimist and how do you do it?
Yes I think it is, and you do it by trying to look at the positives in every situation you're in.
Say for example you've just spent your last change on a pint in a pub. You're really enjoying it, and have drunk the first half of it quickly. Don't think 'damn I've only got half left' instead think 'great, I've got another half to go'.
It really is that easy.

I think you've had enough son. It's time to leave.
Empty now. Both of them. [edit] and the kebab and chips afterwards was nice too. So it's glass empty, me full.[/edit]
Yup, me too.
Just finished my last JD (with ice) - no Coke in the last one before bed
I was expecting more from you lot, I am disappointed. Maybe i will resurrect this on monday morning!! 🙂
OK, late night pop psyc it is then, reckon being positive and outgoing and winning are all very different things and mutually exclusive.
Winning at anything is about probability, e.g small businesses have a 50% failure rate, so start, fail, start again, repeat, the odds are going to be in you favour soon enough.
Positive - this is about realising you are responsible for how you feel or react not the outside world. Controlling your mind, steering your thoughts in to what will eventually be a habit, rather than just being the sum of your random experiences.
Outgoing - I believe this is down to genetics but I think you really mean either confidence (practice) or being happier - see positive.
is it really a glass? is the fluid inside worth having? who owns it? should a different glass have been provided? will someone else come along and drink it while you're moaning about it being half empty? so many questions... so many things you could worry about...
my personal attitude - 'oh look a glass with stuff in it'.
tinribz ^^ is spot on. Life is full of things and people and experiences and the quality of your life is down to your perception and response to them. Nothing else.
Depends whose round it is: if it's mine then my glass is still half full thanks and someone else might have to get the drinks in if they're that desparate. If it's not my round then yes, my glass is half empty and I'd love another. 😉
The glass isn't half empty or half full. It's the wrong size.
sizist
of course it's possible to change.
Positive Mental Attitude is a habit. Just gradually change your thought patterns. Make your face into a smile, and it makes you feel happier
and remember:
Glass is definitely double the size it needs to be. Adjust expectations to within 10% of reality and you'll feel much more fulfilled.
Half empty. Which is a good thing as it's full of manky pond water.
The glass is half full, and there'll be someone along to top it up in a minute 🙂
My cup runneth over 8)
Not quite answering your question, but definitely (IMO) overlap...

Optimistic realist here. I always, always look for the good and always seek to make things better if I can. It is often tempered, especially at work, by that realism. However, I just do believe that I can have a positive impact in the things I do.

Almost exactly what I was gonna say too.
It does seem to me that the STW forum is full of "glass half empty" types, always reading the worst into every possible situation be that politics, the role of the Forestry Commission or whatever.
It's quite depressing at times.
Its not only the forum users its an English thing.Nice people but always have to have a moan about something and then seem happy.Sometimes taking a bid deep breath and looking for a positive spin on things is all thats needed.
If it's my round it''s still half full.
If it's your round it's half empty already.
Heard about an interesting experiment. 2 groups of people, those who consider themselves lucky and those who consider themselves unlucky. Both groups given the same newspaper and asked to count the number of photographs in it. On a page in the middle somewhere was a half page ad stating 'show this to the tester and get £250.'
Most of the 'lucky' group spotted it, most of the 'unlucky' group didn't.
the advert said 'stop looking for photos and show this to the tester to win £250'. the unlucky ones saw it and read it but kept doing what they'd been told to do

Half a bee, philosophically,
Must, ipso facto, half not be.
But half the bee has got to be
Vis a vis, its entity. D'you see?
But can a bee be said to be
Or not to be an entire bee
When half the bee is not a bee
Due to some ancient injury
When I see people with a half full glass I always try and piss in it.
I've thought about this a bit, I understand the metaphor. I think my default is Glass Half Empty, with the possibility of it being/getting better/filled. That's kinda how I live my life. It has ceretainly hit bottom, but hopefully not again. back to default. I just always see something better than half!--- the possibility is out there...
It's always full.
Either of air, liquid or a mixture of both.
Yes you can change.
Look for a positive outcome from a negative feeling or situation.
Are you hungry or looking forward to eating next?
Cold or looking forward to getting somewhere warm.
Paying to much for sex or adapting to being an ugly brute.
Ran out of bog roll or glad to of not shat in your pants..
I've moved form half empty to half full with some serious effort and focus. I feel better for it. It's possible but it really does take a radical mind shift to consider everything and not react immediately.
I am definately a half full type of person and have always been, but sometimes I can get hung up on certain things and worry about them too much. My trick to stop worrying is to ask the question: "Does this matter in a hundred years from now?" and that kind of sorts the rubbish things out from the real things to worry about in just one second!
Glass was designed by a civil engineer and therefore has had considerable precise calculations followed by a safety factor of 2.
True story...was sat on the front on one of our club road rides along a sheltered valley road, it had peed it down for the first hour so we were all pretty soaked, took a side road off straight into a block headwind... I piped up "at least it will soon dry us all out"...mate along side of me said " It's always chuffin (or similar) half full with you!!".... its just a case of being positive and making the best of things...this year has been dire business wise due to Govt spending cuts, I've done all sorts of pretty low paid menial jobs to sustain our company....but don't complain and always think there are loads of people worse off than me.
Container (whatever it is) always half full here. No point thinking otherwise. I could have curled up and given up a long time ago if my cup wasn't half full.
