Just advertised an old diesel civic for sale this afternoon on Gumtree. In the space of 5 hours I've had three separate phone calls from different people who could barely speak a word of English. Properly broken communication resulting in me passing the phone to the wife and back trying to make head or tail of what they were asking... most of the questions were about information that is clearly stated in the advert i.e number of owners, mileage, mot etc...
One of them got mega irate and aggressive as we were struggling to communicate. Now I understand that English was not the first language of these individuals... but surely if you are struggling with speaking it that badly then picking up the phone and getting angry with someone who can't understand you is a bit out of order? Ended up just hanging up on two of them as it was getting ridiculous.
Anyone else experienced similar?
Not like that but I recently sold some bedroom furniture on Gumtree, everyone who inquired was east european, (or sounded like they were)
Sold a set of bedroom furniture yesterday via Gumtree. All enquirers and the buyer were straight forward and easy to deal with.
I think the question was have you experienced something similar. Not, please tell me your gleeful gumtree success story!
I've had about 10 emails about the BMX I have on gumtree, just one of them was comprehensible and it was offering to swap for a playstation. I suspect all the gibberish ones were from native english speakers though.
I will stop asking NW 😉
I know it wasn't you, there weren't any quotes!
I sold all my rabbits on gumtree and I must say they couldn't have gone to better people, pleasure to deal with, where abouts in the country are you OP?
I've never had any trouble selling stuff on gumtree.
Nottinghamshire, just had another one a minute ago. It's making my wife laugh her head off at my frustration with being unable to understand these people.
I advertised a bike on there and foolishly put my mobile number on the ad. I was woken at half five one morning by some idiot offering me half the asking price.
I only ever use emails if I sell anything now.
My mother likes to make a show of not being able to understand anyone who speaks with even a hint of a regional UK accent, and makes embarrassing fuss on the odd occaison she's forced to converse with someone who speaks English as a second language. The reality is she can understand perfectly well if she wants to, and I can imagine if I were faced with that it would make me pretty irate.
I'm not saying the op is like this, but there are plenty of people who go out of their way not to understand anyone "foreign".
Chapeau Sir Genuine lol there.

I can also testify they were delicious !

Maybe you need to change to just plain old 76 !
E mail response only for ads when I'he done it. Some easy some plebs.
I am letting my flat, and had a chap this week who face to face viewing the place I could barely understand. I refused to let the flat to him, as he also was a cash-in-hand, I can move in now chap...
He accused me of being racist, and it was because he was Indian.
The look on his face was priceless when I pointed out I was dual nationality Indian, and that half my family are still living there, and therefore he could go and do one, "challo"...
ebay and gumtree are great. You meet some quality characters.
I sold my dad's double bed on gumtree, cost him about £2k, it was electric and moved into all sorts of shapes with a remote. Sizes were very clearly highlighted in the advert and obviously, the buyers wanted a bed of a particular size. I ended up putting it up 4 times with greater and greater emphasis on how big it was and that people would need to bring an appropriately sized vehicle. The first couple turned up in a 206, second guy comes in a saloon beemer. All a joke.
I once saw a track bike on gumtree. All looked legit (and was I reckon), but way too expensive. I made an offer but the guy said no, fair enough. I then got a track bike through a friend and then the guy from gumtree gets in touch two weeks later saying he will accept my offer. I tell him sorry but I've bought one and he gets really arsey, sends me emails at odd times in the day, borders on threats, tells me he knows people at the velodrome who can stop me riding there, stuff like that.
I should have realised what this said about the type of people who ride at the track but it took me a while. 😉
Gumtree is great for winding your mates up.
Put an add saying "brand new iPhone unwanted upgrade £250" and put their mobile number in the advert...
They will get calls for weeks at all hours of the day from all manner of weirdos*
*allegedly
Should have read this thread earlier, just put all my spare but not particularly valuable bike stuff up for a nominal fee just so someone can use it. An astonishing collection of the barely literate.
One bloke keeps hassling me asking if the forks will fit his 20" frame with 140mm travel. (yes I have put steerer size on there.)
Someone annoyed because I won't deliver a kids bike seat. That I've put up for free.
*sighs*
Used the Friday-Ad to advertise a running machine a couple of weeks back.
Ad went live Sunday morning, couple turned up at lunchtime thew same day and paid full asking price.
It was bigger than they expected so I drove behind them and took the bit with the belt on it to their house for them, was about a half hour drive.
Whole experience was very pleasant to be honest. If they'd haggled on the price I'd have charged them for fuel but they didn't, so I didn't.
