I am the most unmusical person on the planet, but my girlfriend wants to learn to play the guitar, so I might get her one for christmas.

I have no idea what's a decent guitar, what price range to look for etc.

Anyone got any (informed) advice?

just make sure you buy a right-hander if she's right handed, and vice versa. Jimi Hendrix could carry off the upside down guitar, but I doubt if anyone else can ๐Ÿ˜‰

Personally I'd recommend anyone starting out goes for a nylon strung "Classical" style guitar, which can generally be picked up fairly cheaply. Although the neck is wider than a steel strung acoustic or electric, it's a lot easier on the fingers for beginners. I've known a lot of people who've started playing but soon quit as steel strings can be harsh on the fingers.

Thanks Albino, I'll bear that in mind

I would have to disagree with Albino. Unless they particularly want to play classical guitar, I would avoid nylon string guitars. They might be softer on the fingers, but cheap ones are a nightmare to keep in tune and are considerably harder to play due to the wider neck.
