I came off the bike last Tuesday night. The first couple of nights were extremely painful. The skin is healing, no sign of infection, but I have shooting pain in the muscle underneath and to the side of the wound when I first start moving, especially if I’ve been still a while. The undamaged skin is extremely tender to the touch, especially on the outside edge of my leg.
Does anyone have experience of this?
Have you got some glass/metal lodged somewhere under the skin?
No, there’s nothing in there. It’s like the nerves in the muscle underneath and to the outside edge of my leg have gone a bit crazy. Once I’m moving it’s all fine, but the initial pain is something else.
it kinda shoots down to my foot as well.
The shooting nerve pain down the legs sounds not unlike sciatic pain - is it possible you’ve tweaked or twisted something in your back / hip when you came off?
The pain is from the knee down though?
the skin there ( that isn’t damaged) is very sensitive to touch
Can't help with the 'not directly related to the rash' pain but colloid plasters are a godsend for road rash / grazed knees etc. The moist environment it creates stops nearly all the pain.
It does sound to me like the pain is not from the gravel rash but form another injury
For reasons, for some time I was slapping myself on the side of the leg with a ruler quite hard. Started to get nettle rash type pain made the link stopped the slapping about 18 months ago. Still have the pain although it's eased now. Put it down to nerve damage.
Oh and the "reasons" I'm coping with better.
I slid out once when MTBing and had a big gravel rash on the side of my leg below the knee, wasn't too bad at the time but was really painful for a while after. Throbbed quite a bit all the time and standing up (I guess as the blood pressure changed) caused shooting pains in and around it. It was super tender and weeped a fair bit to. I figured I'd just gone down a layer or two of skin more than usual - can't remember how long it took to get back to normal (I remember showering hurt to...) but probably not more than a couple of weeks.
