After a cider/stone floor Derry pub interface last Saturday my phone went to the great scrap heap of tech in the sky. It had lasted 7 years.

decided to go for Samsung rather than Motorola this time around, picked it up at local Argos on Friday lunchtime and spent all day transferring apps and logging in to them (forgetting most of the passwords didn’t help)

Saturday morning dropped it in the loo.

I’ve had 2 phones in 12 years and now had to buy 2 in 24 hours. note to potential purchasers of the Samsung A14 it has no official IP rating but can confirm its 0 on the water ingress.

On the upside, it means you can dodge your mistake and get a Pixel.

Was it a test?

I once dropped my wallet in the urinal at work, but that's not quite the same.

Don't men have, erm, a built in device to keep phones from dropping into the loo whilst sat down?

Bit late now, but if you sign in to Google on an android phone, it backs up all the data and apps which will then resynchronise when you sign in on a new device. Saves all that app installation messing.

Years ago (Nokia era) my phone fell out of my shirt pocket towards the toilet bowl. Luckily with my fish-like reflexes I managed to swat it clear of a watery death... Straight into a tiled wall. Which killed it.

Left the replacement in my car one night when we had freakishly low temperatures. That one went out the same way as Capt. Scott.

One of my old phones was on life support - not all the keys worked (texting was err interesting) but getting a parking fine because I couldn't actually dial the number to pay was the kick up the butt I needed to finally get a new phone.

What, like a pocket, you mean? Or do people actually go to the bog and keep grepping away on their phones while having a piss or taking a dump? Ewww!

That accounts for the things I see online about how your phone screen’s got more germs than a toilet seat then.

Mine’s in my pocket most of the time, and its case has a lanyard attached which is, in turn, attached to me. Never lost or broken one yet, although I did drop one once on a steep lane, where it somersaulted half a dozen times down the gravel median strip. It was only a couple of weeks old. Fortunately it was in a case with a screen protector, and worked fine for the next three years.
