Just dug a Gopro Hero 7 out of the cupboard, hasn't been used for over a year.

Update the app and connect to the camera.

Camera needs an update and the thing has been trying to update for the last 45 minutes, still trying.

I remember the app been rubbish when I first got the thing.

With all the money and the number of sales why is it like this?

Very annoying.

Because all the development effort goes on developing the next best thing.

And the rest of the money goes on marketing.

They're like red bull, a marketing brand with a sideline in cameras.

Annoyingly they're still the best tool for the job.

Aye, dreadful. Hero 8 here, got it to connect to my phone once, never managed it again. Even on a new laptop, I can't get the editing software to install, I've basically given up, and put the SD in a reader.

Any recommendations for half decent editing software?...

I find the most annoying thing with DJI product (Especially gimbals etc) is that you have to sign in via email and password every time you want to use the app!

For 'pro' products it's almost a running joke now

Standing there fumbling with your phone in front of a client just to change a basic setting 🙁

I've been debating what to get and although I've considered the GoPro 8 I've heard so many bad reports that I'm not encouraged.

I'm seriously considering the Osmo Action.... however, there is very little stock anywhere and the price has basically rocketed up by about £80.

I could have bought it with the additional battery pack/charger for £249 a few weeks ago... now £329 perhaps with the same battery pack but from many sellers just the camera and no extra battery stuff. I can't bring myslef to pay that.

For a bit of balance, I have a Hero 8 and it just works fine except in the surf when it has a habit of changing between photo, time lapse and video. I suspect that may be due to not having the screen locked. It works fine with my phone and the separate remote. It is easy to use and gives fantastic results. I especially like taking photos on it.

I haven’t had a problem with updating but you used to be able to put the update on the micro so card and do it that way. Not sure if you still can.

Davinci resolve

Update firmware by using the Microsoft card. I don’t use the phone app.

NCH Videopad, it's not free like some options, but it will run on a toaster, even my 10 year old dual core i3 laptop with a whopping 4gb of DDR3 and the graphics rendering power of a potato can run it.

I have a Hero 7, 8 and 9 (and a Max) - they all work fine and, since the last software update, all seem to connect pretty reliably to my phone when required. I rarely faff about trying to download footage via the app though - SD card goes straight into a reader and I download files onto my laptop for review and editing.

The most recent Go Pro film editor seems to perform basic functions, but I don't tend to use it very much other than for the 360 footage from the Max. Everything gets loaded into DaVinci Resolve and sorted out in that - DV Resolve is fully featured, free and easy enough to use to perform basic editing jobs and tidying up footage if that's all you want to do. All the more advanced stuff like sound editing and colour grading can be bypassed if you're not looking for that level of sophistication.

Exactly this. My old 5 worked perfectly in the surf, my 7 not so....realised the lock was on the 5 but not the 7. Changing the 7 lock to on worked perfectly.

Anyone looking to sell one? I’d like to have something to record nice views when cycling on holiday. Not so much the gnar, but a bit of gnar. Semi gnar.

Don't know about the software but the physical design of the camera is execrable.
