Yes, I can eventually find what I want but I asked for "Sunrise beneath clouds" on Google images.
90% of what is returned are "sunsets" and lots of photos of clouds from "above"
I know you are meant to be able to use brackets and things to force Google to return what you asked for but how much more precise can I be?
It seems that the only way to narrow it a bit is to put sunrise below clouds -sunset -above
Basically say what you want and explicitly exclude the exact opposite. Annoying
Just put it in " " and it will search the exact phase.
Its not really google's fault. Google returns results based on what people call their image, or what tags they use or what the page context of the image is. If I create an image of an apple and call it 'orange.jpg' then then your search for an orange will find my picture of an apple.
Trying to narrow the search terms works with text if you're trying to find a precise phrase - but with images your search success is limited by how much the creator or host of the image wants you to find it. They're either not interested in helping others find it at all, or they're too eager for traffic and add to many spurious tags
In the good old days I think you used to get more of what you were looking for rather than now where you get more of what they want you to serve you.
I've got one tip for you, add
-site:pinterest.*
to the end of your search to remove all the pinterest pollution from the search results

Oh thank the ****ing lord! That one post on its own has justified the price of my membership to this site. 🙂
You're welcome, if you use Chrome, you can also add the Unpinterested extension which does this automatically for you.
I am unpinterested and getting much better results already. Thanks.
PS I know “Sunrise beneath clouds” gives better results with the quotes but it was the general principle that almost anything I searched for came back with almost the exact opposite or completely unrelated stuff for the majority of results

Not nearly as confounding as Amazon in that respect - I quite often search on there for items that quite singular in their description - get a page of unrelated garbage - think 'fine they don't stock it' - google for other sellers of the item and half the first page is results on Amazon 🙂
It is like the made really good search engines and then realised they actually wanted to make really good money instead

Shhhhhh! It's a trade secret!
unpinterested
What I could really do with is a plugin or search engine on mobile and desktop that I can add multiple sites to block - Pinterest, Amazon, CRC etc.
Yeh frigging Pinterest in image search results .. Such an annoyance.
