Had to reset the password for my Google account, no biggie it's always worked in the past.
Except the 2 factor authorisation message wasn't pushed to my phone and the other option was 'my recovery codes' which I got years ago, and have no bloody clue where they are stored. Most likely my Google drive, which it transpires isn't the most sensible place for them... 🙄
So has anyone ever thrown themselves on the mercy of the Google Account restore process? Was it successful?
The largest problems if it's really knackered are my e-mail address all the accounts registered to it plus the associated passwords collected by Chrome. Also photo's which I obviously need a better backup solution for.
have you forgotten the old password? otherwise it should still work until you've completed the 2FA process (although it may ask for extra security like 2FA!)...
I've managed with gsuite accounts. Never tried with a gmail.com account.
I don't like account recovery codes for this reason; we all mean to print them out and put them in the fire safe...
have you forgotten the old password
Yes. Although If I can remember it I do have a trusted device that may log in without 2FA, so it'd be worth trying.
I'm glad to hear you've had it work, puts my mind at rest a little. Recovery instructions should come through this evening if the 48 hour pause is to be believed.
To follow up, just in case anyone searches for this in future.
e-mail came through last night to my recovery e-mail address informing me that 2FA had been switched off and to just log in again. Worked, but doesn't seem awfully secure to me.
Anyhow, 2FA re-started and a new set of recovery codes generated and saved to my OneDrive. I'd have to do something really incompetent to lock myself out of both of them at once!
