My auntie was knocked off her motorbike by an artic in London, unlike the lass in the OP when the truck stopped she was between the two axles on the tractor. The emergency services couldn't get her out so.... the had to reverse the truck back over her. She can laugh about it now.

Amazing story. By her own admission she was a nervous cyclist and hugged the kerb, the worst place to be.

Ive seen the aftermath of such an accident. It questions whether its worth the risk. Sorry I made a mistake isnt like nudging your drink in a pub.

Unfortunately at work I deal with accidents like this all to often. one that will stick with me is a chap riding in an organised event that took him along an A road. he was an experienced road cyclist. that didnt make any difference to his outcome. He was run over by a polish lorry driver who they believe was on his lap top at the time.
The driver didnt stop (because he hadn't realised he'd hit anything) and took some finding, unfortunately he died a few days later from his injuries. His wife pursued a case against him as she wanted a sorry. She did get a large settlement but never an apology.

But when I weigh up the risks of cycling in light of the awful things I deal with on a day to day basis I feel it is worth the risk. maybe because I also deal with pedestrians getting knocked over on crossings and on pavements, freak work accidents that kill or seriously injure people.

There will always be extreme tales of woe in everything we do - just remember the millions who get through each day with nothing more than the feeling of a good ride!

And I would say it is far more risky walking through the fruit and veg section of a supermarket - the risk of a serious slipping injury that will leave you on your fat back side capable of no more than watching Jeremy kyle,is dangerously high. . . .

(and that isnt a dig at anyone genuine but one of the more enjoyable bits of my job is identifying the fibbers 🙂 )

Stories like this scare me silly.

Understandably so, and I could probably tell you stuff about road rage against cyclists (for just being cyclists) that would make you even more sacred.

but like I say you need to consider how rare these things actually are - bad things will always get talked about but it doesn't mean they are common. Safe rides are common 🙂

Yeah, it's sh1t like this coupled with the incredibly poor condition of roads (just look at the number of pot holes that have appeared/worsened over winter) that makes me want to switch from road to CX.

I had a standing argument with a jcb who used his bucket to 'make sure I corrected my riding line into the kerb which was the correct riding place'.

I'd rather take my chances as a pedestrian. At least I could see death coming at me.

Then theres the Brakes food delivery guy in dark sunglasses on a grey/dull early morning. His employer took the complaint very seriously.

What if the female rider he almost hit hadnt leaped sidewayssonto the kerb intime though? It'd been an Inquest.

One lads wife became ballistic when he backed down from me. She told me clearly she'd lookout for me and run me over. Well she screamed it. He didnt scare me. She did. All because he scraped past me- I did the knuckleshuffle which led to him slamming on. Jumped out shouting come on.
I haven't commuted by bike since. Too many tired, stressed, angry and text-tapping idiots.

That'd be me. Read it. And that's exactly the kind of thing that makes me have these arguments.

Some motorists, such as the guy on that thread, believe that we have absolutely no right to be on the road and if we really must be there then we should apologetically ride in the left gutter, regardless of the implications to our safety.
