No, he retired earlier in 2025. So, yes, just short of £40 each for a tribute band (although The Ruts were supporting with 2 original members...). £6.50 a pint as well.
I'd actually go and see The Ruts again if they were local and reasonably priced.
Just back from Grant lee Phillips at the trades in hebden. First line he sang, his voice transported me back to Manchester main debating hall (academy 2 now) in 1993 on the Fuzzy tour. No rowdy overdriven guitar bass and drums tonight, but his voice is great, and it was a lovely gig
Just back from Fust at Hope & Ruin in Brighton. Good Americana, but could do with a little more variety in tempo. Excellent fiddle player. New venue for me.
Another brilliant Banquet Records mini-gig / album release show, in a new (to me at least) venue - the theatre at Kingston College (not uni). Great venue, perfect size for this, it has those raked seats that many of these student venues / sports halls have that slide back under each other to leave a flat floor and their PA and lights systems were spot on.
Oh, the act? Kid Kapichi - played just around an hour, lots off their album which is released in about 20 minutes time, and a few from previous albums. Not a band I knew a lot about but daughter saw them as support for someone a while back and for £12 and a doddle of transport (5 min drive from work) they were great, lots of good audience rapport, decent songs played semi acoustic - all miked up obvs and with electric bass and a mix of electric and acoustic guitar. They've quite a heavy sound on record, this was a bit mellower which disappointed a few punters in front of me who wanted a moshfest.

Lots of smaller bands across several venues all raising money for a homeless charity, but a great way to spend a sunday afternoon / evening.
Highlights for me were
Pict - looked surprised to be playing to a rammed crowd in the Bodega
Part Time Animals
Archie and the Astronaughts - who looked thrilled to be playing to a large audience on the main Rock City stage
Fat Digester - filled the Rescue Rooms stage with 11 of them including a 5 piece brass section
It's Indie Venues week. Get out and see something, even something you don't know if you'll like, because unless you support your local venues when there is someone you like they won't be playing in your venue because it'll have closed.
I think at least 2, prob 3 visits to the Boileroom for me this week.

This friday its CIARS at Marrs Bar in Worcester,saw them at Worcester music festival last year and liked them loads. Saturday will be at Rock and Roll Brewhouse Bar in Brum for Djabbic 3 and The Leaking Machine. Sunday will be a couple of covers bands again in Brum.
Naima Bock at Papillon in Southampton this Thursday. Went there to a gig on spec last month, which turned out to be one of the best for some time - Divorce supported by Curiosity Shop.

as enjoyable as each bands performance was, I think that cryptopsy’s sound could have been improved with less overspill from the ‘crash’ and ‘ride’.
their unique sound seems to derive from the jazzy collisions between the bass and the skins of the drums.
but, four hours well spent!
I saw Big Sexy Noise in Sheffield on Friday, which is Lydia Lunch and Gallon Drunk. A batshit american singing over swampy guitar and drums - 'twas ace!

Well, that was an interesting weekend! The "So Young" lineup at Suburbia in Southampton was ok, Man/Woman/Chainsaw were great, but what a grim little venue. I'm a massive fan of small, grotty venues (eg, The Green Door Store, Brighton), but this was just horrible. It was too hot, smelled bad and had 2 huge pillars blocking the view of the stage. So, between bands, we went to an area front of the stage and had these weird ****s (literally) breathing down our necks. Won't be rushing back there.
Saturday was Xiu Xiu's Eraserhead tribute. Bonkers. The finale was the singer singing a slow version of the Lady in The Radiator Song then walking to a miked up wheelie bin and throwing bottles in, then mashing them with a stick. Oh yes. My kinda cultural experience!
Apparat tomorrow in London's HERE at Outernet. Good venue.
Beers n Bands were brill all weekend, Friday in Worcester started in Oil Basin Brewhouse then up to Dragon Inn for pints with an old workmate. Then Marrs Bar for the bands, started with Headwired, 4 Black Country lads making a very enjoyable noise,Then Red Skies, again 4 lads making a good noise.Main headliners were CIARS who've gained another guitarist so now a 5 piece and the young crowd knew every word of every song.
Saturday was Rock n Roll Brewhouse in Brum with friends for The Leaking Machine doing jingley jangley guitars,very Byrds, Teenage Fanclub. Next were Djabbic 3, a Vocalist, bass with effects n drums a bit Royal Blood.Beer was Mash City Rocker brewed downstairs by Lyn.
Sunday was Brum again,The Wellington then Prince of Wales for beers then O Bar for Amstel and Metropolitan Nash southern american rock done very well.

The other thing I do is mark the email address that Twickets use to send out alerts as "VIP" in my contacts, and set push notifications for when I receive an email from a VIP address. In my experience, most ticket selling activity occurs in the final 24 hrs before the gig, when last minute things pop up and people have to shift the tickets.
Well, Ash were surprisingly good – the crowd were loving it, especially all the stuff from the album 1977 (Kung Fu, Angel Interceptor, Girl From Mars, Goldfinger).

we’ve rented a tent from tangerine dreams for the last 5 years (3 GMs, 2 EotR). £240, worth every penny, showers, reasonably priced cafe, and at GM right behind main stage which is actually really quiet yet a couple of mins walk to / from the action
was supposed to be VNV Nation earlier in the week but that's been shunted to next year due to Mr VNV havng an op last year and still not 100%
next sortof gig is accompanying my wife to a Lux Lives gig, which is a load of different bands do cramps and associated noise, tributes. last time she went to one she was enthusiastically greeted by our GP, who then jumped on stage to join the rest of his band. that was unexpected.
March is Michael Monroe, (and buck cherry, but we're not there for that). no doubt he'll be doing some acrobatics around the venue.
April is Just Mustard, a band I've not long known, but like their vibe. very cranes like vocals but more guitary.
We have tickets for The Cure, but not sure whether we'll be going as we'll be heading to s****horpe for a weekend with spear of destiny and new model army for my wife's birthday.
oh, and of course, Metallica, Gojira and Knocked Loose, family outing with my daughter and her fiancee.
Covenant have just announced a date in glasgow later in the year so should be going to that for a bit of bleepygoth.
I need to find some more gigs to fill the gaps.
Martyn Joseph in Acapela Studios, near Cardiff tonight. I've said it before, the artists seem to love Acapela (must be the pizza!) but it's a crap place to watch a gig. Tiny, with poor views. The best seats always seem to be full of locals who've reserved tables and don't know who the musicians are. It's also a PITA to get to and to park. But, I bought these tickets as a Xmas present for someone, and they can't go, so I'm using them but not fully looking forward to it. On the plus side, I love Martyn Joseph and he always gives a good gig!

Jethro Tull are playing locally to me in May. I say Jethro Tull, but it's Ian Anderson plus others, seeing as he's always treated the band as dispensable. He'd lost his voice when I last saw JT, over 25 years ago, so can't believe that he'll sound any better, and also the last few albums have been completely dreadful...
But.... classic JT are one of my favourite bands, it's local and will probably be the last time I'll ever get to see Ian Anderson. However, given his age and the fact that if it gets cancelled I'll be scalped for cancellation fees, I can't bring myself to book tickets at £60 each. I'm waiting until about April.

^ I don’t know about that, but they’ve been touring in 2025 as Theatre of Hate as well as SoD - I wanted to see them but I’d already got a ticket for Gary Numan (I think) on the same night. I’m looking forward to this one - Liberator is great song (it was one of our 6th Form songs), but they did lots of other great stuff back then.
If you like the music of Peter Green (founder of Fleetwood Mac) check out Remi Harris, Man of the World. An amazing talent with a crack band. Probably playing in a small venue near you. Not to be missed.
Chameleons last night in Halifax minster. Couple of new tunes which were ok, couple of seldom played old ones which should maybe stay seldom played, and a load of exhilarating classics, up the down escalator, the fan the bellows and second skin were fantastic. Sound was pretty good for a big old church.
Slippery People last night in Edinburgh, recreating Talking Heads " Stop Making Sense" .. Superb.
A Dutch string quartet on Friday night in a church in Milngavie (just outside Glasgow).
In between lovely-but-as-you-would-expect late quartet pieces by Mozart and Schubert they played a contemporary piece by an Amsterdam composer called Joey Roukens, which was influenced by Steve Reich and was completely amazing.
Last night was The Great Wave, a brand new Japanese/Scottish Opera work (premiered on Thursday) based on the life of a Japanese artist called Hokusai and his most famous work. A world I knew nothing about, it was so interesting. The opera itself was a bit odd in the first half, but came together nicely by the end. So good.
Went to see a fork-bendingly talented guitarist called Tony McManus last night at Barnoldswick Arts Centre. He was playing with a German lady called Julia Toaspern who was also a hugely talented guitarist and fiddle player. Celtic tunes, bit of jazz. A wee bit reminiscent of Pentangle. Brilliant little venue, too.
A diverse 24 hours this weekend, starting with the hauntingly beautiful Tenebrae Choir in the surroundings of 16th century Trinity College Chapel, Cambridge. Highly recommended.
Ending with Big Special in Rock City*. I don't know them too well, but glad to have gone. Very important messages with an energetic performance to match.

Friday was Militarie Gun at Clwb who were brilliant, been listening to the record and searching back through what Hardcore/Punk bands to listen to as even though I wàs a teen in the 90s watching loads of BMX videos it was a scene I never properly got into

Took my kid to see Deftones in Manchester at the weekend - not really a fan but it was cool to see a big show. They brought the fanbase out, filled the co-op live. Band was on point, they're prob in that everyone is sober, 8 hours sleep a night phase of their career - Chino's voice was excellent.
Denzel Curry was great in support. Filled the room absolutely no problem.
Got my tickets for the Beta Band in Dublin in MAy, can't wait. Decent (small) venue, so hopefully it'll be great

Not my usual thing, but following fatbikedog’s recommendation have grabbed 2 of the last 3 tickets for Remi Harris playing in the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth. Turns out one of them is the seat next to a work colleague and fellow band member in a defunct band.
Before that, next week is Wednesday on Wednesday at The Roundhouse. Seen Wednesday before but new venue for me.

I've been to hundreds of gigs but apart from Glastonbury in the 90s they have always been at small to medium venues. Luckily the type of music I prefer (folkrock, guitar, acoustic, indy) has always been easy to access that way and back when I was younger all the bands I liked played that circuit, even bands like The Pogues, Suede, Primal Scream, Sinead O'Conner etc
These days it all seems different and so my kids dragged me to the O2 to see Florence. To them a massive venue is totally normal - they have seen Arctic Monkeys, Billie Eillish, Taylor Swift and several others there but to me it just seems alien.
Its basically like there are two concerts going on - the crowd down on the floor seems to be having fun but how most can see the stage I don't know. Up in the seats (where we were) you get a view but the singer is just a dot and then there are massive screens which keep drawing your eye so you end up watching them...which means you are getting a second hand experience. When she goes into the crowd you are watching it on a screen whilst others are right up next to her like a normal gig. if you stand up and dance (what else would you do at a gig!!!!!) you are blocking the view from those behind. Its all very weird.
Shame as she was fantastic but this morning I really don't feel like I've been to a live event.
Also, 4 tickets a meal in a chain restaurant, parking = £600 WTAF.
Back to Bexhill pavillion next month for the Cowboy Junkies - can't wait and much more my thing!

One of my rules for life is never sit at a gig, ever.
Even at massive stuff, if you are standing you feel part of it (assuming you put some leg work in to get in the front third). Sitting I just don't get - it's just watching something passively happen in front of you - might as well be at home watching it on TV.

Its not different for me - I still go to loads of small gigs, I said it was different for the younger generation. I'm not sure that many younger people still go to small venues...the fact that many are closing down shows that. Whenever I've spoken to my kids friends or my mates children (16-23 sort of ages), almost all of them have been to a stadium gig but only a couple have been to an assembly rooms/corn exchange sized one. When I was their age it would have been the reverse.
I'm not sure there are that many new indie bands playing small venues really compared to what there used to be, or not new indie bands that appeal to a younger audience anyway.
Yeah, I guess the majority of kids are mostly fed the stadium stuff by their algorithms. Not many of them have the interest to listen to stations, podcasts, blogs that promote the new, upcoming bands. I do see a good number of younguns at the smaller gigs, but I'd agree it is mostly middle-aged, 6music types. I get your drift now 🙂

My youngest (19) is absolutely mad about music and has fantastic taste. She loves smaller bands BUT rather than check out the pubs and the clubs she finds them on Deezer, Tidal or some other platform.....which means she gets right into a fledgling band from Texas or Denmark rather than a local one with the obvious issue that a small band from Austin or Copenhagen isn't likely to be playing in the UK! We couldn't do that - looking in the back of NME or record shop flyers was all there was...
Back to Bexhill pavillion next month for the Cowboy Junkies - can't wait and much more my thing!

Last gig I sat down at was Big Thief at The Albert Hall in Manchester, we got there early and sat front middle of balcony and it was ACE, but otherwise I agree, standing is best.
Big venues, yeah not great really, giving Coop Live a go with James in a few months, but Big Thief again at the Barrowlands or Super Furries at the Apollo later this year are as big a venue as I’d normally go for.
Castle Hotel, Deaf Institute, Gorilla and Yes in Manchester are all pretty much perfect.

I don’t like nostalgia gigs but! Belle and Sebastian tonight at Troon town hall played If You’re Feeling Sinister in its entirety (ok that’s only about 35 minutes) followed by about an hour and a half of glorious picks from the back catalogue.
Just brilliant, I’ve seen them so many times and they’re always great. It’s a safe space for middle aged bookish men to dance to perfect songs without feeling awkward. Went with Mrs Tyred, our friends plus child 2 and his special lady friend plus my BiL whose film was played on the screen towards the end.
