course they will chase her, will also damage her credit rating,

sell handset she has, buy iPhone on eBay for circa £360

I think she should watch a film about starving people in Africa, then write it off to a learning experience and cope with her phone. She still has all her arms and legs yes ??

(sorry bit harsh, but its just a phone)

she can buy her way out of it, or as suggested buy a new phone and just stick the SIM in that.

As said, just stopping DD is probably not a great idea - that's the whole idea of a contract. She signed up to the contract, so either has to see it out or buy her way out of it. Either way, the phone company get the money.....
The phone company will probably also do an upgrade to the iPhone for a fee and/or a more expensive tariff.

What is wrong with the phone she has? Is it really that bad, or is it just not an iPhone?

yeah, just buy an unlocked iphone, sell (try to) whatever phone you have (another bet it's a samsung), and keep the contract going with current provider, assuming it's providing enough minutes / texts / data (the data thing being VERY important if you want to make the most of the iphone).

as nonk suggests. Are there any alternatives she'd consider?

htc Wildfire & probably the Desire can be had for a lot less than the iPhone.

I've got a Desire and it's great. My sis has an Samsung touchscreen (not Android) and it's cak.
The Desire (and the Wildfire) blows the Samsung out of the water and the Desire is on a par with the iPhone.

Just make sure she tries one out before parting with the spondoolies.

If you're that desperate to make her happy just swap phones with her 😉

HTC Android phone, Wildfire or preferably the Desire, cheaper than the iPhone and, some would say, better.

...or as said before unlocked iPhone on fleabay.

Get an Iphone 3G 8GB, not noticeable worse than a 3gs, and loads cheaper too if she's after an iphone.

like this: £200.

Also, which would be cheaper - stick up a WTD ad here for a 3g, someone will have one for sale - probably in mint condition.

misogynist, woman hater
a misanthrope who dislikes women in particular

Where is there any indication anywhere that the OP dislikes his girlfriend?
I'd go with trying to get hold of an iPhone from fleabay or somewhere. Bloke I work with got hold of a brand new 4G iPhone for around £200ish, on Three. Sell the old phone, possibly cover the cost of the iPhone.

So basically she's gone to poly with a phone that all her new friends laugh at?
It's a phone, it's not the end of the world really.

If she struggles with what the word 'contract' means, how did she get to uni?

I'm sure she's lovely really though, so just give her yours. (Or start working out which one you'd prefer to sleep with - her or the iPhone - as I'm sure one of her mates will suggest you swap when she mentions you have one...)

Someone was selling a Galaxy S on the Classifieds for £180. It's a good match for a 3g/3gs iPhone. Android works super smooth on it. Good big screen. However my mates iPhone 4 is probably a bit nicer. Also depends what kind of user Your GF is. My OH loves her 3g as it's simple to use but still has loads of features, not as open as Android but much easier to use. I like my Motorola Dext as it has a qwerty keyboard, runs Android and was cheap. Not a cool phone though.

But beware, You get her the new fancy phone and I can see at my uni that iPad is what the cool kids have, iPhone 4 only does not cut it anymore 🙁 So start saving up 😉

Quidco are doing £150 cash back on all iPhone tariffs with vodafone untill the 16th. If she takes that and sells her phone it should go some way to buying herself out!

I'd take another look at that^ link for the Wildfire on the classifieds.

Just had one myself, would probably have preferred a Desire but the contract was a little out of budget and wasn't worth stretching to (end of the day, just a phone etc.)

Anyhow, really happy with it.

she might be a media studies student.

she's special. why not get her an aPhone? 🙂
