[Closed] Getting rid of a car with no VC5

Evening All,

I have an old sorn'd Focus that needs to be gone by next Wednesday when I move and had intended to list on Facebook today. Somewhat frustratingly however, the VC5 isn't with the other paperwork for the car and after turning the house upside down looking for it, is nowhere to be found :/

A quick check online shows that a replacement is easy enough to order however comes with a 6 week wait which isn't very helpful. I see that the new keeper can complete a V62 for a new VC5 so am thinking that if I print one out, get them to fill it in while here and post it that should be all good. Happy to cover the £25 cost for this to ensure it is done.

Is this the best way to go about it or is there another option?

I'd voided that option on the basis of "press 1 to wait 500 years..." however it is perhaps the most obvious answer. Will give them a shout in the morning.

If you apply by phone its up to 5 working days (normally), up to 6 weeks by post

Keep a record of all details of the sale, date, time, new owner etc. You dont want any dubious future use of the car to come back to you as the registered keeper.

Also be aware no V5 will put off some people, and bring out some bargainers.

I dont think you can tax a car as a new keeper without the new keeper form?

You’ve got no chance of getting through on the phone at the moment if thier Facebook messages are to be believed. I think everything is still being done online and most staff are attempting to work from home.

I think you'd be best to make arrangements to have it transported to be honest. Most people won't touch a car without a v5 with a barge pole, and those that will, you probably don't want the hassle of dealing with.

If you apply on line I'd expect it back in a week. paper stuff isn't being processed at the moment. Very little chance of getting through on the phone.

A bit of recent first hand experience of DVLA and the V62. ...

I posted a V62 to DVLA in mid March just before the lockdown started. This was with the green slip following a change of owner with the V5C going astray in February.

The V5 was finally issued in mid May.

DVLA's website says 6 weeks to issue form V62. Mine was more than 8 and that was in the system before DVLA told people to stop sending them paper forms.

When I tried phoning noone picked up, online chat and email is knackered and was only dealing with essential workers (which in their guidance was basically NHS, logistics and pcv).

The apparent lack of continuity and contingency planning is pretty dumbfounding.

When we deal with these at work you find DVLA writes to the former keeper and gives them a few weeks to reply so any correspondence will go to your old address, not that it will necessarily matter.

I would try and get it trailered, assuming it's local and sort it out from the new house by ordering the V5C complete with new address or be prepared for a hefty discount.

Thanks for the feedback all. To be fair the car is a non runner and therefore worth very little, maybe £100 with a fair wind if I'm extremely lucky but doubtful given the current circumstances. TBH I'd be happy with getting rid of it and it not coming back to bite me with say unpaid parking fines etc...

Think its best to try the online option and see how quick it comes back and if needs be tow the car elsewhere. This of course brings the question of can you tow a car with no MOT, tax or insurance?

If it's only worth £100 just get it weighed in at the scrappies.

As for towing I seem to recall if it's on a dolly it's ok to not have insurance etc.

If any wheels are on the ground you need tax, insurance and mot. Unless your taking it to a pre booked MOT, in which case you don't need the MOT, but you still need tax and insurance.

+1 do it all online.
I have bought a camper from a dealer on a Sunday, V5C in the post by Wednesday. Do not mail, they have a mountain of unopened post

The V5 is the proof of ownership, no-one in their right mind would buy a car without one. "Yeah mate, totally my car that, honest."

it happens for various reasons.

V5 is not proof of ownership .... hence it says "This document is not proof of owner ship"

I'm going to be hugely anally retentive now, but it's not. It's proof of being the registered keeper, which is different. You can be one without the other. As proven by an associate of mine who managed to successfully apply for the V5 of a vehicle he most definitely did not own. Also often comes up when talking about leases.

Still, bollocks to buying a car when it's not present!

You cannot replace it online afaik.

I think you can notify a change of keeper online BUT you need information that is on the V5C to do it.

So on further rummaging through I have found the green New Keeper slip for the car which has the VIN (?) number on it. Quite what has happened to the rest of it I have no idea but that's beside the point. With that in mind then I can complete the NOTIFY CHANGE OF KEEPER here and that should be that?
