England's best ever player was Jamaican. So I dont see what that matters. Also Owen Hargeaves isnt exactly English.

looking awfy like finalists here

We haven't even seen brazil, holland, spain or Italy yet, but yes the Germans always sniff around the cup.

Cacau doesn't seem a very German name? Are there any Germans in the team?

Sure there are but France did this in their winning period, most notably Zidane. Do England do this and if not why not?

Funny to say? He's been German for 1 year....nothing to do with him being quite good at football I bet

Ah, ok, so it's not actually national teams then, fair enough

Just looking at Hargreaves he could have played for Canada, wales or England so you can hardly criticize his choice, where as this cacau matey is from Brazil a quality footballing nation.

How's he doing the Jamaica rap? He's from just south of the Watford Gap?!

Yes - Romster - John Barnes was England's best ever player.

Scored their best ever goal too.

Mixed emotions really Aussie losing is good but Germany rampant is bad ๐Ÿ™‚ just wondering about the red card, it seemed a bit soft really. Will be gutted if we have one of those decisions in our games!

There are video clips of nations "best ever players" on bbc sport hard to compare pele vs zidane as the game has improved alot over those years. Saying that cruyff looks phenomenal.

I would say 'greatest' player was Bobby Moore, World Cup winning captain, 100+ caps, brilliant defender etc.... Or how about Bobby Charlton, 49 international goals? Hard to look past those two in my mind.... Any more suggestions??

From my watching lifetime I would say beckham or shearer. Becks freekick against greece was very special.

Lineker had 48 in 80 and 10th in one world cup. Has any other English players won the golden boot?

There's no definitive answer to that one for me, although Bobby Moore's name was the one floating around a few years back after some kind of poll they ran meant he came out on top.

I think it's unfair to give someone the official tag anyway, there's 11 players out there on the field who at some point contribute to the outcome of the game/competition - look at Geoff Hurst taking all the glory for 66 - it's a load of sh1t really!

Without looking on the internet - someone name me 6 other players from the World Cup winning squad of 66! That's squad - not just the team who played in the final........

I have England greats who i class as key players for us over the years and they include:

Alan Shearer
Bobby Charlton
Terry Butcher
Paul Gascoigne
Stuart Pearce
Bobby Moore
Jimmy Greaves

Mr Capello seems to agree with you ๐Ÿ˜‰

England's greatest player? I could think of a few that have played in my lifetime - Kevin Keegan for one. OK he was a naive manager but a pretty good player;Bobby Charlton could score a mean goal from midfield, and as strikers go Shearer & Sheringham made a good partnership - remember the 4-1 demolition of Holland at Euro 96?

And Gazza's goal against Scotland? who (south of Hadrian's Wall) could ever forget that one?
Stuart Pearce could play through a broken leg, and could even score penalties after a bit of practice.

No, I reckon the Italia 90 squad (which lasted a few years after that, despite the Turnip) was pretty good - and their progress to the semi-finals (despite a few hiccups in the group phase) in Italy would tend to back me up

Lineker was a great poacher (hell, you have to be to score that many for your country) but how many of his England goals came from outside the box? And how many were solo efforts?

Beckham has to be the best dead ball expert in my lifetime, and his passing ability...
ok he can't head, can't tackle, can't dribble and is not very fast, as no7s go, but when you can do what he can, who cares? Seems like a nice guy too, mostly

I don't have that much interest in football generally since I stopped playing but I enjoyed watching that, the Germans were just fantastic on occasion the play in the oppositions box was awsome. That match was essentially what we needed to have done yesterday, simmilar scenario going in a top flight team against okayish team except the Germans obliterated the Aussies and we floundered against the yanks.
