Garmin Epix watch questions

Am really pleased with mine works well, good battery life. My son bought one to replace his Fenix 7 and is equally pleased. I don't think you can go wrong for £300

Epix2 here. 3 years old ish. Chosen over a Fenix 6 as it had a brighter screen,  Mapping/Nav works fine assuming you have the eyes to read the screen 😉 I've had a Fenix 3 and 5 before this Epix, so I'm used to how Garmin/Connect operates. I know some people are not fond of the UI, but it works for me.

Use it to track all my rides/runs/exercise classes/weights etc. Not totally convinced by black-box-metrics like the Body Battery and the sleep score. but mostly they mirror how i'm feeling. Might be confirmation bias tho! I think the HR monitor has been upgraded in the latest Garmin models, sometimes mine is very slow to react to HR changes, but other than that not much to moan about!

Sapphire glass means no scratches and it's been properly abused/crashed on/scraped against things.  Battery life still good. Charge it every 4-5 days I guess but i record something most days and have GPS running for all day rides once a week.

Edit: as per ^^ post above, £300 is a great price. Especially when you look at the ludicrous price of the replacement (hence no interest in changing mine)

Yep the screen is ok for navigation, as long as you can deal with it's small size, I've not tried komoot on it so can't comment on how any of the turn by turn stuff translates to the epix interface, or how easy it would be to control via the watch.

My only gripe with it is the awful menu system.  There's about 4 different menu systems depending on which button you've pressed, and they have overlapping lists.  My old instinct you just pressed once for the 'watch' menu and long press for the 'navigation' menu.  And for example there's an altimeter/barometer/compass screen, and I've lost it, somewhere in the menu's I've probably turned it off but I can't find it.  You can customize each menu if you can be bothered, but why Garmin thought things like "Trolling Motor" were an important enough feature to make default I'm not sure.

I think the navigation works well. Unless you are cycling where being wrist based isn’t ideal. Unlike you the Fenix which can be handle bar mounted

I got mine from h Samuel . Pleased with it. In fact no longer use my edge explore 2 as the watch is just as good

Yep good watches, don't get the latest updates, but do get bug fixes and all that business. I wear an apple watch day to day, but for proper training I keep using the Epix Pro, it's definitely worth £300 

How are you finding the 47mm size? 

The actual screen size is 33mm. Is it usable for navigating on the mtb. I presume it will vibrate when a turn is coming up.

I think mine's ace and a real step up from the Vivoactive it replaced. Battery lasts ages and has tons of features even if I don't use the nav. For £300 it's a no brainer.

I Have an Epic pro2 in 47mm and has been excellent for me. Although I  have not used it for Biking I used it the maps whilst backpacking through Kyrgyzstan a month or so ago.  I downloaded the Wikiloc app and could use that to add routes via the Garmin Connect.  You can set it up to vibrate on turns and also  if you go off course.  You can also add or remove data screens and choose what data you want on them.  

I was really happy with how I got on with it, but hiking for long hours in a day I did need to put it on charge to be safe for the next full day.

47mm seems fine for what I used it for, but hiking is a lot slower than biking but I would think the auto zoom would cater for that.
